Baseball Takes Charlotte Series With 12-4 Victory

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Every starter for the Tulane (27-7, 7-5 C-USA) baseball team recorded a hit in the 12-4 win over Charlotte (13-16, 5-6) on Saturday afternoon. For the ninth time in the last 10 games the Green Wave recorded 10 plus hits.
Each starting pitcher faced one over the minimum until the fourth. Tulane's Andy Cannizaro recorded the first hit of the game, a leadoff single. After stealing second, Cannizaro scored on a Gautreau single into right. James Jurries sent in a second run, giving Tulane a 2-0 lead.
The Green Wave continued to score in the fifth. Jon Kaplan hit his second home run of the season, a two run shot into left center.
Tulane starter Barth Melius (5-1) had a no hitter until the fifth, as Alex Derhak rolled a single past the infield. Two more 49er hits loaded the bases. Melius walked in a pair of runs and a single by George Sandell scored a third. Charlotte batted around the order but the Wave held on to a slim 4-3 lead through five innings.
Melius got the win as he faced eight over the minimum through eight innings. He is 5-1 on the season. Melius scattered four hits and gave up three runs, two earned. Nick Bourgeois pitched one inning of relief and struck out one.
Steve Shirley started the sixth reaching on an error by the shortstop. Jurries advanced Shirley into scoring position on his third double of the year. Shirley scored on a Michael Aubrey sacrifice fly. Matt Groff and Anthony Giarratano sent in two more runs giving back the four-run Tulane lead.
Jurries was 4-for-5 on the day with two RBI. Kaplan sent in a pair of runs on two hits.
With two runners on in the Tulane seventh, Aubrey slammed his ninth home run of the season and sent in three additional runs. The home run extended Aubrey's hitting streak to 13 games and is the fifth consecutive game he has gone yard. Aubrey was 1-for-3 with a game high four RBI.
A pair of Wave runs were added in the eighth.
The losing pitcher was Pat Gambale (2-5). He went five innings, gave up six runs and struck out a pair.
