
Tulane Baseball Sweeps Charlotte With A 18-4 Win

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Tulane (28-7, 8-4 C-USA) baseball team completed its first ever three-game sweep of Conference USA rival Charlotte (13-15, 5-7 C-USA) in Charlotte with an 18-4 win on Sunday afternoon. The game was called afert seven and a half innings due to the 10-run rule.
For the second consecutive day every player in the line-up recorded a hit.
For the tenth time in the last 11 games the Green Wave recorded 10 plus hits. The Wave tied a season high 18 runs score. Jon Kaplan led the Wave with three hits. He sent in one run and scored four.
Tulane pounced in the first inning scoring four runs on an error by the Charlotte first baseman and a double by Matt Groff. Charlotte answered with one run in the bottom of the inning.
In the third, Tulane?s lead off hitter Andy Cannizaro was hit by UNCC starter Justin Brown. Steve Shirley followed with his 10th home run of the season, giving the Wave a 6-0 lead. Cannizaro scored a career high five runs on the day.
Tulane added to its lead, scoring three runs in the fourth and fifth innings to go up 12-4. The 49ers scored one in the fourth and a pair in the fifth.
The Green Wave had a huge sixth inning as they batted around and put six runs on the board. Shirley and Matt Groff each sent in a pair of runs in the inning. Shirley was 2-for-3 with a game high five RBI. Groff sent in a career high four runs.
The winning pitcher was Beau Richardson (6-1), who went six innings, gave up eight hits and four runs. He struck out three.
Justin Brown was the losing pitcher. He went 3 1/3 innings and gave up nine runs, five earned, and struck out three.
Tulane hosts LSU at Zephyr Field on Wednesday, April 11. First pitch is 7:00 p.m. This weekend the Wave hosts Conference USA leader Houston. The first game is Friday, April 13 at 6:30 p.m.
