METAIRIE, La.- Tulane starting pitcher Beau Richardson scattered seven hits to lead the Green Wave to a 7-1 win over LSU in the New Orleans Super Regional at Zephyr Field on Sunday.
With the win, Tulane (55-11) advances to the College World Series for the first time in school history, eliminating the defending national champion Tigers. The Green Wave also improved to 15-1 against in-state opponents. LSU, playing its last game under retiring legendary coach Skip Bertman, ended the season with a 44-22-1 record.
For the second consecutive game, the Green Wave scored in the first inning and never looked back. Andy Cannizaro singled, moved to third on a Jake Gautreau single and scored on a James Jurries bast hit into center field.
Tulane then exploded for six runs in the fourth to put the game away. With the first seven batters reaching base, the Wave took advantage of an error, a past ball, a balk and three stolen bases. Cannizaro drove in a pair of runs with a single to center, then scored himself on Jurries single. It marked the 35th time this season that Tulane has scored five or more runs in an inning.
LSU answered with a run in the fifth. Sean Barker drew a lead-off walk, stole second and scored on Johnnie Thibodeaux's double to left. But from there, Richardson and the Green Wave defense would shut down the Tigers.
Richardson (7-1) recorded a career-high eight strikeouts, with just one walk, to pick up his seventh win of the season. He allowed just five hits through the first eight innings and saw more than four batters in an inning only twice.
LSU starter Tim Nugent (7-3) took the loss, allowing seven hits and five earned runs in three innings of work. Roy Corcoran pitched five innings in relief for the Tigers, allowing five hits and two earned runs.
Cannizaro once again led Tulane at the plate, recording a pair of singles, driving in two runs while scoring two himself. James Jurries was also 2-for-4, picking up two RBI.
Barker and Bryan Moore each had a pair of hits to lead LSU. LSU was 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position on Sunday and was just 6-for-30 in the three-game series. The Tigers' 3-4-5 hitters were a combined 7-for-36 over the weekend, with just three RBI between them. By comparison, Cannizaro and Anthony Giarratano each had eight hits for Tulane, combining for six RBI.
The crowd of 11,870 was the second largest Regional crowd in NCAA history and is the largest outdoor college baseball crowd ever in the state of Louisiana.
