CORVALLIS, Ore. - - The Tulane women's basketball team shot just 25.5 percent from the floor against Oregon State, falling 56-51 to the Beavers at Gill Coliseum on Friday.
With the loss, Tulane falls to 1-1 overall, while Oregon State improves to 2-1 with the victory.
Muci Haris led Tulane with 12 points thanks to four three-pointers, while Teana McKiver added 11 points, with nine of those coming from the free-throw line. Kelly Nadeau hit a pair of three-pointers for the Wave, finishing with 10 points.
The Green Wave had trouble scoring down low against a physical Oregon State team, as McKiver and forward Gwen Slaughter combined to hit just 3-of-21 shots from the floor. Slaughter pulled down 15 rebounds for the Green Wave.
Oregon State took a 29-21 lead into the halftime lockerroom as the Green Wave battled foul trouble. Post players Teana McKiver, Gwen Slaughter and Kaisha Lymon all were whistled for two fouls in the opening stanza, while sophomore forward Lakethia Hampton picked up four. The Wave were also forced to overcome 20 turnovers in the half, but made up the difference with 11 offensive rebounds and five three-pointers in the first stanza.
The Wave cut that lead to just one, 33-32, at the 15:58 mark, but Oregon State pushed the lead back to 10 with 11:06 left. Tulane kept fighting, pulling to within four on several occasions, but OSU hit just enough crucial baskets and free throws to preserve the win.
Tulane was just 14-of-15 from the floor (25.5 percent), but was 8-of-19 from behind the three-point line (42.1 percent). The Wave had a 45-39 edge in rebounding and had 22 offensive rebounds.
Tulane will return to action on Sunday, as the Green Wave travel to face the Pilots from the University of Portland. The Wave open the home portion of the 2002-03 campaign on Thursday, Dec. 5, when the team welcomes Alabama State to Fogelman Arena.
