CINCINNATI, Ohio - Despite 16 points from D'Aundra Henry and 15 from Lakethia Hampton, the Tulane women's basketball team could not overcome a poor shooting performance, falling 55-41 in Conference USA play Friday night at Cincinnati.
Tulane, who trailed nearly the entire game, struggled from the field all night, hitting just 17-of-50 (34.0 percent) and missing all 12 of its three-point attempts.
"We just couldn't buy a shot, and when you only get to the free throw line seven times it's really tough," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "We really rushed our shots, we had good looks but just rushed them."
After coming out of intermission with a 29-16 lead, the Bearcats extended their lead to 18 points, 42-24, behind 10 points from Anne Stephens before the Wave began chipping away. Henry forced three straight turnovers, turning around to scored four points while Hampton added three as Tulane pulled to within 10, 42-32.
As the Wave looked to cut the lead to single digits, the Bearcats extended the advantage to 14 after Karen Twehues hit back-to-back jumpers. After the two teams exchanged buckets, a classic three-point play by Henry, who scored 14 of her team-high 16 in the second half, brought the Wave to within 13 with 3:37 remaining. But the Bearcats (8-17, 3-9) allowed just two more points the remainder of the game to send the Wave (10-15, 2-10) to a 55-41 defeat.
"I commend our team on effort, when the ball was on the floor we dove for it and really tried," Stockton said. "Cincinnati did a nice job and executed well. We didn't go down without a fight today."
Henry and Hampton, who scored 16 and 15, respectively, led Tulane rebounding as both players hauled in six boards. Stephens paced the Bearcats, who shot 34.8 percent from the floor, with 20 points, while Twehues added 16.
Hampton, who entered the contest with 999 points, wasted little time collecting career points 1,000 and 1,001 as the New Orleans native hit her first bucket of the night 30 seconds into the game.
The Wave returns to action Sunday, Feb. 20, at Louisville in a 12 p.m. (CST) game that will be carried live on the Conference USA Television Network, carried locally on Cox Sports Television (Channel 37 in New Orleans). The game will also air on the flagship radio station of Tulane women's basketball, WRBH 88.3 FM.
