Men’s Basketball Falls at Georgia Tech, 82-68
Nov 26, 2016 | Men's Basketball
ATLANTA – Cameron Reynolds scored 20 points and reached double-figures for the sixth game in a row, but Tulane men's basketball suffered an 82-68 road loss to Georgia Tech on Saturday evening at McCamish Pavilion.
Reynolds shot 6-for-13 from the field, 2-for-5 from three-point range and made all six free throw attempts to go with three assists, while Malik Morgan chipped in 13 points and five rebounds. Kain Harris reached double-digit scoring for the fourth time this season with 11 points off the bench.
Josh Okogie led the Yellow Jackets with a game-high 38 points, while Quinton Stephens had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds and Ben Lammers chipped in 19 points with 12 boards.
"In the first half, they just beat us up on the boards," head coach Mike Dunleavy, Sr., said. "They got the free throws. We just made our own mistakes and let them build a double-digit lead for the half."
The Green Wave's first four baskets came from a different source, the fourth a Melvin Frazier three to tie the game at nine at the 15:40 mark. Tulane (1-5) opened up a 7-1 scoring run from that point, sparked by a Morgan triple and back-to-back dunks by Sammis Reyes and Blake Paul.
Georgia Tech (4-1) countered with an 18-5 run of its own to reclaim the lead, 28-21. The Green Wave responded with six-straight points after a three by Harris tied the game at 28, before a Morgan jumper put Tulane back in front, 30-29, with 2:30 to go in the half.
The Yellow Jackets would close the period with a 7-3 scoring advantage over the final two-plus minutes, as Okogie hit a jumper as time expired to end the first half, sending the home team into the intermission with a 37-32 lead.
The Wave shot 14-for-32 (.438) overall and 4-for-14 (.286) from three-point range without one free throw attempt in the first half, while Georgia Tech shot 15-for-34 (.441) from the field, 3-for-7 (.429) beyond the arc and just 4-for-12 (.333) at the foul stripe.
"We came out in the second half and we didn't play great," Dunleavy said. "To start out, we had some bad shot selection. Then we fought back. We had it to a five-point game, and [then] we broke down on a couple of our different basic principles."
Beginning with the Okogie jumper, the Yellow Jackets went on a 13-0 run to the 16:20 mark of the second half that created a 48-32 advantage.
Georgia Tech kept its lead in double digits until a pair of free throws by Reynolds cut the deficit to 50-41 with 12:49 to play and the Green Wave's rally commenced from that point.
Tulane got two more free throws from Reynolds and a three by Von Julien to move within just five points, 59-54, at the 8:11 mark and one last time, 63-58, with 6:41 remaining, but could not draw any closer as the Jackets used a 15-4 run to create their largest lead of the game, 78-62, with just 2:03 to go. Georgia Tech closed out the final moments and held on for the 14-point victory.
Tulane will close out its string of road games for an in-city clash at the University of New Orleans on Tuesday, Nov. 29. Opening tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Lakefront Arena and the game will be televised on Cox Sports Television.
