Men’s Basketball Stumbles at New Orleans, 74-59

NEW ORLEANS – Kain Harris tied for a game-high with 18 points off the bench, but the Tulane men's basketball team could not overcome cold early shooting from the field in a 74-59 road loss at New Orleans on Tuesday night at Lakefront Arena.
Harris shot 7-for-12 overall and 3-for-5 from three-point range, while Malik Morgan chipped in a season-high 17 points with four rebounds, three assists and a trio of steals. Harris has now scored in double-figures in five of seven contests this season.
The Privateers placed four players in double-digit scoring, led by Erik Thomas' 18 points and seven boards. Travin Thibodeaux added 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists, as Christavious Gill contributed 14 points and a game-high five steals.
New Orleans (3-3) used a 5-0 run to begin the game and expanded its lead to 14-2 on a straightaway jumper by Thibodeaux just under seven minutes into the opening period. Tulane (1-6) would close that gap behind a pair of three-pointers by Harris, who was responsible for the Green Wave's first eight points, and ignited a 9-2 scoring run to cut the deficit to 16-11 with 8:07 remaining in the first half.
The Privateers extended their advantage back to double digits with nine-straight points and an 11-1 scoring run to create a 26-12 lead at the 4:25 mark and held on to take a 34-17 advantage into the locker rooms at halftime.
The Green Wave shot a season-low 6-for-30 (.200) overall, 2-for-13 (.154) from three-point range and 3-for-6 (.500) at the free throw line in the first half, while the Privateers went 10-for-24 (.417) from the field, hit one of four attempts beyond the arc and shot 13-for-15 (.867) at the foul stripe.
Tulane's deficit grew to as large as 27 with the score 66-39 and 5:59 left on the game clock. The Green Wave was able to force New Orleans into 22 turnovers and shot 50 percent (18-for-36) from the floor in the second half.
UNO earned three times as many trips to the free throw line and concluded the night 27-for-34 (.794), while the Wave went just 6-for-11 (.545).
Tulane outscore New Orleans, 32-28, in the paint, 28-14 off turnovers and 24-14 off the bench, but the Privateers outrebounded the Green Wave, 40-30.
Tulane returns home on Friday, Dec. 2 to host St. John's. Opening tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m., in Avron B. Fogelman Arena in Devlin Fieldhouse and the game will be televised nationally on ESPNews.
