HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Cameron Reynolds recorded his second-career double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds, as Tulane earned its first road victory of the season, 71-64, at Southern Miss on Saturday evening at Reed Green Coliseum.
Reynolds shot 8-for-14 from the field and 4-for-9 from three-point range for his fourth 20-point performance of the season, while Ray Ona Embo added a career-high 15 points to complement five rebounds, three assists and a trio of steals. Blake Paul reached double-figures for the second time in as many games with 10 points and grabbed seven boards.
The Golden Eagles placed three scorers in double digits, as Quinton Campbell and Kevin Holland scored 15 points apiece. Eddie Davis contributed 13 points.
Despite surrendering the first five points of the game and trailing 8-2, the Green Wave exploded with 14-straight points as part of an 18-2 run to create a 20-10 lead with 7:12 remaining in the first half. The scoring rush began with back-to-back three-pointers by Reynolds to tie the game at eight-all and ended with a layup by Ona Embo who scored eight points during the spree.
Both sides went through shooting droughts from that point, but Tulane's (3-7) sound defense caused all kinds of trouble for Southern Miss (3-5), who was held without a field goal for 15:17 until a three by Michael Ramey with one minute left ended the slide, before the Wave took a 30-17 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
Tulane shot 11-for-33 (.333) overall, 3-for-13 (.231) beyond the arc and 5-for-6 (.833) at the free throw line in the first half, while the Golden Eagles shot just 5-for-22 (.227) from the field, 3-for-11 (.273) from deep and 4-for-11 (.364) at the free throw line.
The Green Wave made seven-straight field goals beginning with Ona Embo's jumper at the 16:01 mark and ending with a Melvin Frazier dunk with 11:30 remaining, forcing Southern Miss to call timeout. Tulane created its largest lead of the night, 56-35, on an impressive windmill dunk, followed by a Reynolds jumper with 8:47 to go.
Southern Miss made a late charge with a flurry of threes and drew within just six points, 70-64, with 20 seconds remaining, but the Green Wave was able to hold on for the seven-point victory.
Tulane finished the game shooting 25-for-60 (.417) overall, 7-for-23 (.304) from three and 14-for-16 (.875) at the foul line, while the Golden Eagles shot 22-for-54 (.407) from the field and 11-for-26 (.423) beyond the arc, but just 9-for-21 (.429) at the free throw stripe.
Tulane will take a nine-day break for final exams before returning to action Monday, Dec. 19 to host McNeese State. Opening tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in Devlin Fieldhouse and the game will be broadcast on ESPN3/WatchESPN.
