NEW ORLEANS - The (-/RV) Tulane women's basketball team (8-4) will close out its non-conference portion of the schedule this Wednesday at 2 p.m. CT when they host the visiting Maine Black Bears (7-6). The Green Wave have won three straight overall and remain unblemished at 6-0 inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse this season. In fact, the Wave have won 10 straight at home, dating back to last season, marking the first time since 2003 they have achieved said feat. SERIES HISTORY - MAINE
• Wednesday marks the third ever meeting between the two programs.
• The two first met in Maine back in Dec. of 1987, where the Black Bears took it, 65-57. Maine then competed in the Tulane Classic in Dec. of 1998, where the Wave claimed victory, 85-76
SCOUTING THE BLACK BEARS
• Maine enters the contest 7-6 on the season. Three of their losses came to ranked opponents: No. 10 Mississippi State, No. 3 South Carolina and No. 11 Miami.
• Maine attempts over 20 three-pointers per game, which ranks 34th in the country.
• Maine averages 57.6 ppg while allowing 59.3. The Black Bears shoot 40.4 percent from the field but suffer from a -5.2 rebounding margin.
• Sigi Koizar is the lone player who averages double-figures at 14.2 ppg. Koizar ranks 37th in the nation in free-throw percentage (.875).
• Tanesha Sutton leads the rebounding effort at 5.5 boards per game to go with her 7.5 ppg.
HOME SWEET HOME
A year after tying the program record for most wins inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse, the Green Wave are back at it again, starting the season off 6-0 at home. In fact, the Olive and Blue are averaging 72.3 ppg at home, with a +13.0 scoring margin. The Wave are also shooting 48.3 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from three-point range. Defensively, Tulane is forcing 19.8 turnovers per game.
Individually, Morgan is averaging 21.3 ppg at home, up from her 17.9 season average. In addition, Morgan (.506), Schulte (.515), Latham (.538) and Wyatt (.552) are all shooting above 50 percent at home.
Last but certainly not least, Tulane currently boasts a 10-game win streak at Fogelman in Devlin, dating back to the end of last season. The last time Tulane won at least 10 straight at home dates back to January of 2003 when they won 12 in a row.
1,000-POINT CLUB
Senior Leslie Vorpahl is within striking distance on becoming the 28th member of Tulane's 1,000 career point club. Vorpahl currently sits at 993 career points and is averaging 10.5 points per game this season.
AN EYE ON THE RPI
According to NCAA RPI rankings, Tulane sat at No. 106 as of Dec. 12. Now, with their current three-game win streak and wins over NC State and Auburn, the Green Wave have jumped all the way up to No. 53. The Olive and Blue will have ample opportunities to continue to increase the ranking, squaring off with No. 72 Maine, No. 96 ECU, No. 39 USF, No. 56 Temple and No. 67 SMU, in said order.
MORGAN'S TREYMENDOUS MONTH
In the last three games, Morgan has been prolific from beyond the arc, averaging 4.3 made three-pointers in that span. As a result, the junior has raised her three-point field goal percentage from .348 to .420, which ranks fifth in The American and 60th in the country. In addition, Morgan's now 2.4 made three-pointers per game ranks fourth in the AAC.
TULANE CLASSIC CHAMPS
For the ninth straight year and 17th time overall, the Green Wave were Tulane Classic champions. The Wave first bested Eastern Washington, 63-51, before edging out Auburn, 61-59. Morgan was named MVP of the tournament after averaging 16.5 ppg and 6.0 rebounds. Vorpahl was named to the All-Tournament team after netting 11.0 ppg and 7.0 assists.
