NEW ORLEANS – The (-/RV) Tulane women's basketball team (13-7, 4-3) received a big offensive boost from Kolby Morgan and Leslie Vorpahl on Wednesday night, as the duo combined for 41 points to help power the Green Wave to a 70-65 win over the visiting Tulsa Golden Hurricane (6-14, 2-5). The performances marked Morgan's five straight game with 20+ points and Vorpahl's third overall this season.
"First of all, this was a hard fought game. I thought Tulsa did a great job of staying in the game every time we took the momentum," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton stated. "I liked our execution in the last part of the game. We were able to maintain the lead once we got it. Once again, I thought it was a game our defense could have been better but Tulsa did a great job."
Tulane started the game on an 8-0 run powered behind back-to-back three's from Vorpahl, who later ended the quarter 3-for-3 from beyond the arc to hand the Wave a 17-11 lead at the end of the opening period.
Morgan then provided six points in the second quarter, extending the Wave's lead to 25-13 at the 6:20 mark. Yet, Tulsa limited Tulane to just two field goals for the remainder of the half, producing a 16-5 run to cut the Wave lead to 30-29 at the mid-way point.
The Golden Hurricane then grabbed their only lead of the game when they connected on a jumper eight seconds into the third quarter. Later tied at 37-all at the 5:14 mark, Tulane notched a 6-0 run that propelled them to a 49-44 lead heading into the final period.
There, the Green Wave found a new gear, tallying an 11-0 run to start the quarter. A Morgan three-pointer capped the offensive flurry, handing the Wave its largest lead of the game, up 60-44 with 7:19 remaining. The Wave defense then held out to clinch the victory, mainly keeping a six-to-eight-point advantage till the final buzzer.
Morgan and Vorpahl executed most of their damage in the second half, where they scored 14 and 12 points, respectively. In addition, Morgan led the Wave in rebounding tonight, grabbing a season high eight boards.
Another difference maker came at the free-throw line where the Wave attempted 19 more shots than its opponent and converted 10 more.
