NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane women's basketball team (16-10, 7-6) will look to tackle No. 1 UConn (25-0, 12-0) and their historic 100-game win streak on Saturday when the Huskies roll into town for a 6 p.m. tip-off on SNY/ESPN3. All tickets are just $5, so be sure to arrive early for the first 400 fans will receive a free Angry Wave scarf. In addition, Tulane will honor Leslie Vorpahl before the game for surpassing the 500 career assist milestone. Vorpahl became just the second player in program history to reach 1,000 career points and 500 career assists.Â
SERIES HISTORY - UCONN
• Tulane trails the all-time series, 6-0.
• Last month, the two met in Storrs where they battled toe-to-toe in the first half. Tulane held Katie Lou Samuelson scoreless in the first quarter, trailing UConn just 19-12. Later, a Morgan three-pointer kept the Wave close, down 40-29 with 2:05 to go till half, but the Huskies responded with a quick 10-0 run before ultimately winning 100-56.
• On Jan. 22, 2016 in Storrs, Tulane jumped out to a 13-2 lead over the Huskies, handing UConn its largest deficit of all last season. However, UConn outscored the Wave 28-7 in the second quarter to build a 36-20 advantage at the half.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
• No. 1 UConn arrives to New Orleans with their historic 100-game win streak.
• The Huskies rank first in the country in assists and field goal percentage, second in scoring margin, fifth in both scoring offense and three-point field goal percentage defense, sixth in three-point percentage and fewest fouls, and eighth in field goal percentage defense and scoring defense.
• Katie Lou Samuelson leads with 20.8 ppg on 49.1 percent shooting, including a 42.1 percent mark from three-point range. Samuelson knocks down 3.2 three's per game which ranks 10th in the country.
• Napheesa Collier follows right behind with 19.1 ppg and a team best 8.7 rebounds. Collier converts 66.6 percent of her shots which ranks third in the nation.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE SURGE
Morgan has led the team in rebounding in seven straight games, reeling in at least 8+ boards in each (averaging 9.9 in that span), including a career high of 12 at Cincinnati on Jan. 28. Morgan has since raised her rebounding average from 4.3 to 5.8, which leads the team. As a direct result, Morgan has earned three straight double-doubles and four in the last six games.
A SPARK FROM BEYOND THE ARC
On Feb. 12 at USF, Vorpahl connected on a season high five three-pointers, one shy of her career high, finishing with 19 points. Vorpahl then converted three treys in the second quarter along vs Cincinnati on Feb. 15. Thus, over the past two game, Vorpahl has knocked down 8-of-12 from three-point range, raising her three-point shooting percentage from .333 to .368. Meanwhile, Morgan continues to be rock-steady from deep, as her 2.2 three-pointer per game ranks 5th while her .389 three-point shooting percentage ranks 4th.
SCHULTE'S BEST OUTING IN 2017
Sophomore Meredith Schulte recorded her best outing in 2017 to date by going a perfect 7-for-7 from the field in the win over Cincinnati on Feb. 15. Schulte's team high 14 points marked her first double-digit scoring performance since Dec. 3.
WELCOME TO THE STARTING FIVE
After 58 games played for Tulane, junior Caylah Cruickshank cracked the starting five for the first time at USF on Feb. 12. In two starts, Cruickshank is shooting 5-of-10 from the field and 2-of-3 from three-point range, averaging 6.0 points, 1.5 assists and 1.0 steals.
EYE ON THE RPI // BRACKETOLOGY
According to NCAA RPI rankings, Tulane sat at No. 106 on Dec. 12. After a season high five-game win streak and notable wins over NC State and Auburn, the Green Wave jumped all the way up to No. 35. After a 7-6 start to American play, Tulane now sits at No. 40. According to Real Time RPI on Feb. 17, Tulane's strength of schedule ranked 40th in the country. Finally, in the latest ESPN Bracketology report on Feb. 14, Tulane was listed as the 'first team out.'
