NEW ORLEANS – A night after producing seven runs on 12 hits, the Tulane bats were unable to solve Stetson pitcher Jack Perkins, who threw a complete-game in the Hatters' 5-1 win Saturday evening at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
The Green Wave collected six hits, including Tyler Heinrichs' RBI single in the seventh that scored Jarret DeHart, after DeHart doubled to start the frame. The Wave was unable to break through with a big offensive inning, however, as Perkins (2-3) tallied 13 strikeouts and no walks.
Â
Stetson scored single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings, then added two runs in the eighth. With the loss, the Wave fell to 9-14, while the Hatters improved to 9-16. The series rubber match is at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Â
"You have to give him (Perkins) a lot of credit," Tulane head coach Travis Jewett said. "We had been swinging the bats well and things are starting to go our way a little bit offensively, and tonight we just ran into a good pitcher who shut us down. I know our guys will have a short memory and get out here tomorrow with a chance to win the series."
Â
Tulane had runners in scoring position on just two occasions other than its run-producing seventh inning. Paul Gozzo singled with one out in the third and went to second on a wild pitch, but was stranded there with a strikeout and a groundout. In the fifth, Sal Gozzo led off with a base hit between first and second, and Lex Kaplan bunted for a hit, putting runners at second and third after a throwing error by the catcher on the play. A lineout double play, however, ended the rally.
Â
After Tulane cut the deficit to 3-1, Stetson scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning on a two-run single by Ben Rowden. Jacob Koos doubled home a run in the third, and Austin Hale hit an RBI single in the fifth. The Hatters loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth, and a 6-4-3 double play allowed a run to score, making it 3-0 at the time.
Â
J.P. France (1-3) turned in a gritty performance on the mound with his longest outing of the season. He went 7.2 innings, struck out five batters, and was credited with five runs.
Â
The series rubber match is at 1 p.m. Sunday. Tickets can be purchased at the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office in the James W. Wilson Center. The game will be broadcast on 88.3 FM WRBH and the TuneIn Radio app, and live video and live stats can be found at www.TulaneGreenWave.com.
