NEW ORLEANS – Tulane baseball's Ted Andrews and Corey Merrill were selected in the 37th Round of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers, respectively, on Wednesday.
Â
Andrews, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, was selected 1,107th overall by the White Sox. In his first season with Tulane in 2017, the redshirt junior made 15 appearances, including one start, and tallied 16.1 innings on the mound. A hard-throwing right-hander, he struck out 10 batters and earned one win and one save for the Green Wave. Andrews transferred to Tulane after spending his first three years at Furman University.
Â
Merrill, a native of Lutcher, La., was picked 1,120th overall by the Dodgers. The senior right-hander was a mainstay in the Green Wave pitching rotation for four years, and completed his career with 15 wins and a 3.23 ERA in 295.0 innings across 61 appearances and 45 starts. He ranks fifth in Tulane history in games started, sixth in opponent batting average (.241), tied for sixth in strikeouts looking (77), and seventh in combined shutouts (seven). He totaled 244 strikeouts and earned two saves – both in his junior season of 2016 when he posted a career-low 2.05 ERA in 15 appearances and five starts. He earned second-team All-American Athletic Conference honors in 2015 after compiling a 2.12 ERA in 102.0 innings.
Â
Merrill is the first Tulane player ever drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Andrews is the third Green Wave player selected by the Chicago White Sox, joining Dan Wagner (1986) and Wayne Francingues (1969). Andrews and Merrill became the 102nd and 103rd Tulane players ever selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft.
