Sep 16, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane volleyball continued its roll Saturday at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse, sweeping Alabama State and North Florida to claim the Tulane Invitational title. The Green Wave extended its winning streak to six games with the victories, earned its second consecutive tournament title and improved to 11-2 overall, 0-0 American on the season.
Match One
The Green Wave, playing with momentum from yesterday's thrilling win, started the first set quickly, jumping out to a 10-5 lead. A 6-2 run helped Tulane grow its lead to 16-7, but Alabama State fought back to close the gap. Junior middle hitter Dayna Kern restored order, tallying three kills (attack percentage of .500) to help the Green Wave take back control of the set. A booming kill from sophomore right side hitter Alexis Silver wrapped up the set for Tulane, 25-19.
ASU responded in the second set, building an early 5-3 advantage before Tulane took back the lead with a 7-1 run. The Green Wave did not slow down, winning the second set, 25-22. Junior outside hitter Hannah Shaw paced Tulane with a team-high three kills in the set, while sophomore libero Kaylie McHugh continued to display her defensive prowess, recording five digs.
Tulane closed the match with a methodical third set, putting away ASU, 25-22, to complete the sweep. Freshman right side hitter Kristen Thompson finished with a match-high 11 kills (.429 attack percentage), while McHugh notched a match-high 18 digs.
Match Two
The Green Wave battled in the opening set, falling behind early before fighting back to win. North Florida opened strong, taking an 8-4 lead to prompt head coach Jim Barnes to call a timeout. UNF continued hammering and built and 21-15 advantage, before an 11-3 Tulane run sealed the set (26-24) for the Green Wave. Kern's three kills (.750 attack percentage) carried Tulane offensively, while McHugh recorded six digs.
The second set provided its share of drama, as neither Tulane nor UNF could build a steady advantage. The two teams traded blows, tying at 12-12 and then 17-17, before the Green Wave put its foot down, pulling away on an 8-4 run to win, 25-21. Thompson delivered four kills on an attack percentage of .571 to keep the Green Wave's momentum rolling.
Tulane sealed the sweep by winning the tightly contested third set, 25-23. Tied at 22 apiece, the Green Wave locked down defensively and pulled ahead, thanks to kills by Thompson. Thompson's ninth and final kill won the match for Tulane and highlighted her excellent night, which was punctuated by winning the Tulane Invitational Most Valuable Player award.
Shaw finished with a team-high 11 kills, Kern recorded a team-high .333 attack percentage and senior setter Justine Bowers posted 16 sets. Kern and Bowers earned spots on the All-Tournament team for their efforts.

"We didn't play great this weekend, but we won the matches and learned a lot," Barnes said. "We used different lineups to get through games, and different people had to step up. I'm real proud of Kristen; she's our MVP. She played really well all weekend. Justine really saved us there tonight. She jumped in and played great. Hannah Shaw had a big match tonight, and Dayna was real consistent. Overall, we struggled all weekend, but we're glad we're done with three matches in one weekend. We're starting conference play and, at 11-2, we'll take it."
