NEW ORLEANS – Tulane bowling will officially get its 2018-19 season rolling this weekend, hosting the sixth annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational from Friday through Sunday at Colonial Lanes in Harahan, Louisiana.
The Green Wave, ranked No. 10 in the preseason National Tenpin Coaches Association poll, will host 13 opponents in their season opening competition, including: University of Alabama Birmingham (No. 11), Louisiana Tech (No. 17), Valparaiso, Alabama State, Florida A&M, Sam Houston State (No. 4), Stephen F. Austin (No. 6), Jackson State, Texas Southern (No. 25), Southern, Alabama A&M, North Carolina A&T (No. 11) and Grambling State.
In addition to the seven participating teams who received Top 25 rankings, Valparaiso, Jackson State and Alabama State also received points in the national preseason poll.
"Our main focus is to enjoy the experience of competing at home and to work on coming together as a team in our first tournament of the season," head coach Hayley Veitch said. "We are a small team and it is vital that we are on the same page."
The three-day tournament will feature five, five-game Baker matches on Friday starting at 9:55 a.m. followed by five traditional team matches on Saturday at 8:55 a.m. In the final bracket round on Sunday, the teams will participate in three Baker best 4-out-of-7 matches at 8:30 a.m. to determine final team standings, with an awards ceremony following shortly after the competition.
The Green Wave finished second in last year's Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational, falling to Sam Houston State, 4-2, in the final match. The home team totaled 14,253 pins in 69 games, averaging 206.6 pins per game among seven participants. Freshman Madison McCall bowled a 217.40 average in the three-day competition, leading Tulane while earning All-Tournament Team honors.
This marks the seventh year that Tulane has hosted a tournament as well as the sixth year of partnership with the Allstate Sugar Bowl. The tournament is free and open to the public.
"There is so much anticipation and excitement with our new tournament host of Colonial Lanes," Veitch added. "They have gone above and beyond anything we ever expected and we can't wait to perform in our home center. Thank you to the Allstate Sugar Bowl, Colonial Lanes and Tulane Athletics for allowing us to make this tournament possible."
