Baseball Earns Doubleheader Sweep of Jaguars
Oct 27, 2018 | Baseball
MOBILE, Ala. – The Tulane Green Wave baseball team started the fall campaign on a solid note on Saturday by earning a doubleheader sweep of the South Alabama Jaguars in Mobile.
Â
The Green Wave bats came alive on the day as the team earned a comeback, 8-5 win in the first game of day against the Jaguars, while leading from the start in game two and pulling away late to win 7-2.
Â
In game one, the Wave plated six unanswered runs over the course of the final two innings behind clutch hitting and solid pitching late.
Â
Seven different Green Wave players combined to produce 14 hits in the contest, led by Trevor Jensen's 4-for-4 outing which included two doubles, two RBIs and a pair of stolen bases. Kody Hoese went 3-for-5 in the game with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored.
Â
Stephen Sepcich and Acy Owen each had two hits and a run scored, with Owen also driving in one as well.
Â
Starting pitcher Kaleb Roper allowed just one hit in two innings of work and a pair of strikeouts to set the tone early for Tulane, with Robert Price, Landon Boeneke, Keagan Gillies and Connor Pellerin all keeping South Alabama off the board during their time on the mound.
Â
The Jaguars got on the board first with a run in the third inning off Ross Massey, but not before Tulane was able to plate two of their own in the top half of the fourth. South Alabama would get one more run in the bottom of the fourth but was able to shut the door to keep the contest tied at 2-2.
Â
South Alabama would strike for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-2 lead over the Wave, however that would be the final scoring frame for the home side for the rest of the contest. Tulane went on to grab a run in the eighth and five more in the ninth to regain the lead, as Gillies would earn the win in the circle with his one inning of work and Pellerin retiring the side in order in the bottom of the inning to earn the save and secure the victory.
Â
In the second game of the day, Tulane wasted little time in jumping out to a big lead early as the Green Wave scored three runs in the second inning, two more in the fifth and two more in the seventh to earn the sweep of the day's action with a 7-2 victory.
Â
Logan Stevens and Collin Burns got the scoring started with their hits in the second, with Stevens bringing in one and Burns driving in two to make it 3-0 Wave. South Alabama cut into the Tulane lead scoring a pair of runs in the third to pull within one.
Â
RBI hits by David Bedgood and Sepcich pushed the lead for Tulane back to three in the top of the fifth, as two more runs would cross the plate in the seventh to put the game out of reach for the Jaguars.
Â
The Green Wave will be back in action for their second exhibition of the fall on November 4, hosting the Southern Miss Golden Eagles at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
