Bowling Heads to Houston for Track Kat Clash
Nov 1, 2018 | Women's Bowling
New Orleans – After a strong performance two weeks ago in their home tournament, the tenth-ranked Tulane bowling team returns to action this weekend, traveling to Houston, Texas, to participate in the Track Kat Klash at Emerald Lanes hosted by Sam Houston State.
Â
The Green Wave forge into their second tournament of the season after finishing fifth at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational at Colonial Lanes, going 8-5 during that weekend's competition. Tulane knocked down 12,217 pins over the course of three days, with a 185.1 pin average.
Â
Along with the Green Wave, the Track Kat Klash will feature a strong field as 12 of the top teams in the country according to the National Tenpin Coaches Association poll will be participating. The field includes No. 2 McKendree, No. 3 Nebraska, No. 4 Sam Houston State, No. 5 Arkansas State, No. 6 Stephen F. Austin, No. 7 Maryland Eastern Shore, No. 16 UAB, No. 17 Louisiana Tech, No. 22 Maryville, No. 23 Monmouth and No. 25 Texas Southern.
Â
"It's a pretty tough field, so it's definitely a step up from our home tournament and it's going to show us where we stand against some of the top ranked teams," head coach Hayley Veitch said. "We've done a lot of preparation the last couple of weeks with sparing, so hopefully we'll be a little sharper than we were at the home tournament."
Â
Tulane had two players finish in the top 10 individually, as sophomore Madison McCall finished with 963 total pins knocked down for an average of 192.6 to place eighth. Senior Tiera Gulum knocked down 955 pins for an average of 191.0 to finish tenth.
Â
The three-day tournament will feature five, five-game Baker matches on Friday starting at 9:55 a.m. followed by five traditional team matches on Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. In the final bracket round on Sunday, the teams will participate in three Baker best 4-out-of-7 matches at 8:20 a.m. to determine final team standings.
Â
At last year's event, Tulane finished 10th in the 21-team field, knocking down 11,878 total pins, with an average of 185.6. The Green Wave posted wins over Nebraska, eventual champion Vanderbilt and Sam Houston State, among others to finish with an overall record of 7-5.
Â
"Obviously, I want us to grow a little bit more. We had a solid base for our home tournament and our idea was to try and bake a cake where you have to put all of the ingredients together and that was our philosophy," Veitch said. "We did an OK job of that, but I think we can do a little bit more. This whole semester is trying to build together as a team."
