Houston, Texas – The No. 10 Tulane bowling team earned a seventh-place finish at the 2018 Track Kat Clash, as senior Tiera Gulum earned all-tournament team honors by placing fourth individually.
The Green Wave went 8-4 on the weekend, knocking down 12,715 pins over the course of the three-day event, with a pin average of 189.8. Over the course of the week the team was able to pick up some big wins over highly ranked opponents in No. 3 Nebraska and No. 6 Stephen F. Austin, among others.
Gulum had a standout weekend by knocking down 1,065 total pins for an average of 213.0, just five pins shy of third place. The New York native opened with the second-best score among bowlers on Saturday with 246, rolling games of 215, 191, 202 and 211.
"A better team performance than our home tournament. The bowlers stepped up when they needed to and were able to bowl in whatever position they needed to," head coach Hayley Veitch said.
After a strong two days of action, the Green Wave entered bracket play Sunday with a rematch against Saturday's opponent in No. 5 Arkansas State who defeated Tulane the day before. Unfortunately, the Olive and Blue couldn't overtake the Red Wolves falling 4-1.
In the next match Tulane went to the wire against the hosting No. 4 Bearkats, winning three of the first four games, but Sam Houston State won the next three, including the final match by just one pin to take the match 4-3.
Tulane bounced back, taking down No. 17 Louisiana Tech 4-1 in the team's final contest of the tournament. The Green Wave had just one game below 180 and wrapped up the match with games of 202 and 203 to earn the victory.
The Green Wave got off to a big start on Friday, taking down a pair of highly ranked opponents in Nebraska and Stephen F. Austin en route to finishing with a 3-1 record on day one. Tulane knocked down 4,644 pins to finish the opening session in seventh, closing with a pin average of 186.5.
Tulane opened play with a 917-909 win over SFA, taking the fifth game with score of 214-206 to topple the Ladyjacks. The squad fell to Texas Southern in the next contest 962-872 but bounced back in a big way to defeat Alabama State 980-778 and saving their best for last against the Cornhuskers by earning two games over 200 in a 937-927 win.
By Saturday the Green Wave moved up to fifth place with a 4-1 record in matches played on the day, knocking down 4,870 pins in the traditional matches for a two-day total of 9,514 and pin average of 190.3.
