Hawk Classic On Tap for Bowling This Week
Nov 15, 2018 | Women's Bowling
NEW ORLEANS – The No. 10 Tulane Bowling team hits the road this weekend to participate in the Hawk Classic in Millsboro, Delaware, hosted by No. 7 Maryland Eastern Shore.
Â
The three-day event gets underway on Friday morning at Millsboro Lanes with five, five-game Baker matches, before moving to Saturday's five traditional team matches to set the stage for Sunday's bracket finals.
Â
Along with the Green Wave, the 18-team field features 13 of the top 25 teams in the nation headlined by top-ranked Vanderbilt. No. 4 Sam Houston State, No. 7 and host UMES, No. 8 Delaware State, No. 9 Farleigh Dickenson, No. 11 North Carolina A&T, No. 12 Sacred Heart, No. 14 Lincoln Memorial, No. 19 LIU Brooklyn, No. 20 Duquesne, No. 23 Monmouth and No. 24 Kutztown round out the rest of the ranked opponents.
Â
"We've had two solid performance tournaments, but we've struggled on our third day so that's been our focus in practice the last couple of weeks," head coach Hayley Veitch said. "It's all about the team working together and trying to play the same part of the lane in order for us to perform well."
Â
The squad has produced a pair of top-10 team finishes so far this season, finishing in fifth place in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational, while taking seventh at the Track Kat Klash in Houston earlier this month. Tulane is 16-9 so far on the year, sporting an 8-2 record in team matches and a 6-3 record in Baker matches.
Â
Tiera Gulum leads the squad individually with 2,020 total pins for a 202.00 pin average through the two tournaments, as in the Track Kat Klash she was named to the all-tournament team after finishing fourth overall and rolled a season-high game of 246.
Â
Veronica Petrinec is right behind with a pin average of 193.00, with 1,930 total pins, as she rolled a season high of 225 against UAB in Houston.
Â
Following the tournament this weekend, Tulane won't be back in action again until January as the squad looks to put together another strong finish heading into 2019.
Â
"This tournament has a good atmosphere, and we're going to get a chance to see teams that we normally don't get to see at other points in time during the year," Veitch said. "So we're going to be up for the challenge to see how some of these northern teams perform and how we match up."
