Women's Hoops Beats LSU in Baton Rouge for 700th Program Win
Nov 15, 2018 | Women's Basketball
BATON ROUGE – Tulane women's basketball turned the program's win counter over to 700 on Thursday night, claiming a 56-54 victory over LSU at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
The Green Wave (2-0) held a 9-point lead with 3:15 left in the game, but the Tigers (1-1) staged a late comeback to make it a 1-point game with just nine seconds left on the clock.
From there, sophomore Kaila Anderson hit one free throw, and LSU got possession back with one final chance. The Tigers inbounded the ball four times in the final nine seconds but were unable to get off a clean shot with Krystal Freeman getting a key block on a Mercedes Brooks layup with just three seconds remaining.
The ball went out of bounds for one final LSU attempt, but the lob pass to the paint bounced off a Tiger hand and harmlessly onto the floor as the final buzzer sounded.
"They're always close [against LSU]," Coach Lisa Stockton said. "Hard-fought, I thought our young kids really contributed today. At the end, we had three freshman on the floor. I think it was great we got the 700th win against an in-state opponent, and it's certainly special to be a part of a program as long as I have, and I feel fortunate for that."
Tulane is now 2-0 to start a season for the first time since 2015-16, and the 700th win in program history came against one of its long-time rivals. Tulane is now 9-31 all-time against the Tigers but has won six of the last nine contests between the sides.
Thursday's victory was a total team effort with six different players recording at least 6 points and only Freeman finishing in double digits with 10. Freshman Erin Gutierrez and junior Kayla Manuirirangi each had 9 points, freshman Mia Heide tallied 8, Anderson added 7 and freshman Dynah Jones had 6.
"Everybody takes a role in scoring, and they do move the ball," Stockton said. "I definitely think that's going to be who we are this year. The team's bought in, I think they're all in. It's not about them, it's about how we play as a team."
All 6 of Jones' points were during a crucial fourth-quarter stretch where the Green Wave led by 7 and was able to answer back every time LSU brought the game closer. But after a Freeman jumper gave Tulane a 53-44 lead with 3:15 remaining, LSU was finally able to close the gap.
Ayana Mitchell, LSU's leading scorer, had three layups in a 90-second span including the layup that made it a 1-point game. But Anderson's free throw gave Tulane enough cushion, and LSU could not convert with the game on the line.
Manuirirangi scored her 300th career point in the game, Freeman snagged her 50th career rebound and senior Meredith Schulte played in her 100th career game.
Freeman and senior Harlyn Wyatt tied for the team lead with six boards while Heide had two blocks and Anderson topped Tulane with five assists. Gutierrez had a team-high five steals while seeing the court for 27 minutes.
LSU looked strong in the early going, using a 10-0 run to take a 7-point lead midway through the first quarter. But once Tulane broke that run, the Green Wave got right back into the game. The visitors closed the quarter on a 12-7 stretch and entered the second quarter trailing just 17-15.
Neither team was able to get much offense going early in the second quarter, but after the media timeout the shots started falling. Tulane took a 21-19 lead on an and-1 play from Erin Gutierrez and traded punches with the Tigers for the rest of the half. LSU pulled ahead narrowly at the break with a 29-27 lead.
After struggling from the field in the first half, Tulane finally got its offense going in the third quarter. A Manuirirangi 3-pointer cut LSU's halftime lead to 1, and two Heide free throws gave Tulane a lead. Gutierrez and Heide then combined for Tulane's next 8 points, and LSU went the final three minutes of the quarter without a field goal as Tulane entered the fourth leading 43-36.
The Green Wave return home Sunday to face Washington at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
