NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane volleyball team is set to compete in its final regular season match this Wednesday, hosting Memphis at 1 p.m. at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
"Our focus right now is on our team and our seniors," head coach Jim Barnes said. "We have three tremendous seniors who put this program on their backs and they've turned it around as far as getting our team to where it is right now, so we just want to honor them on Wednesday."
The Green Wave will acknowledge middle hitter Dayna Kern, libero Lisa Mordell and middle hitter Hannah Shaw after the match in the team's Senior Day celebrations.
Coming off a 1-1 weekend on the road, defeating ECU after falling to Cincinnati in a five-set battle, Tulane stands at third in the American Athletic Conference. The team moved up eight spots in the NCAA's RPI report since last week, checking in at No. 59.
The Green Wave's 24-8 overall and 12-5 AAC record secured the team a spot in the postseason, earning an automatic bid to the 2018 National Invitational Volleyball Championships. This marks the first time since 2009 that Tulane will compete in the postseason.
Tulane remains the defensive leader of the conference, recording an opponent hitting percentage of .151 while standing at seventh in the nation. The team ranks second in the AAC in blocks and service aces, recording 2.48 and 1.42 per set, while also ranking third in kills and assists, with 13.61 and 13.03 per set.
After notching two service aces in Sunday's four-set win over ECU, junior libero Kaylie McHugh became the new conference single-season service aces record holder, totaling 56 this year. McHugh checks in at seventh in the nation and leads the AAC with an average of 0.47 aces per set, while also ranking sixth in digs with an average of 4.35 per set and a total of 518 this season.
Senior middle hitter Dayna Kern leads the conference in blocks, totaling 128 with an average of 1.23 per set, while also checking in at fourth with a .301 hitting percentage.
Memphis Tigers (11-18, 4-13)
An 0-2 weekend on the road against ECU and Cincinnati puts the Tigers in an eighth-place standing in The American.
Sophomore right side hitter Hannah Flowers leads the team with 365 kills, ranking fifth in the conference, while also leading the Tigers with 45 service aces for a second-place conference standing. Freshman libero Kaitlyn Gehler leads the team with 378 digs, averaging 3.67 per set.
The Green Wave own a 21-29 career record against the Tigers, with Tulane going 10-11 against Memphis on its home court. Tulane defeated Memphis in four sets on the road earlier this season for the Green Waves' first conference win of the year.
