Baseball Walks Off UNO on Artigues’ Game-Winning Double
Apr 10, 2018 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – Sophomore second baseman Jonathon Artigues drove a double into the left field corner and junior first baseman Trevor Jensen charged home from first base to score the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to push Tulane baseball past UNO, 4-3, in the third game of the Pelican Cup series Tuesday evening at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Â
Artigues finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI, driving in the first and last runs in the game for the Green Wave (14-20). Graduate senior Ben White (1-3) pitched a scoreless ninth inning and earned the victory, and UNO reliever Rafe Schindler (2-2) took the loss.
Â
Junior catcher Acy Owen provided the tying runs in the sixth inning with a two-run single past the outreached gloves of the first and second basemen. The hit, which knotted the game 3-3, came after the Privateers (16-17) extended their lead to 3-1 in the top of the inning.
Â
"That's the first one in a nine-game homestand, and we needed to try to defend our home turf. Pride had a little bit of a say in that too," Tulane head coach Travis Jewett said. "It's a three-game series against these guys and they won the Cup, but we needed to get a win tonight regardless of the Cup. We needed to get something going so that we could try and spark something. I told the kids after the game I couldn't care less if it was pretty, ugly, conventional, unconventional, I don't really care – we just needed to have more runs than they did tonight. Big hit by Tigues and a good job by Jensen getting on and running hard."
Â
Tulane got on the board in the bottom of the first inning on Artigues' first RBI hit. His line drive single up the middle plated freshman designated hitter David Bedgood, who reached on a walk and moved to third on a base hit by Jensen.
Â
In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore shortstop Sal Gozzo singled behind the third base bag and junior right fielder Tyler Heinrichs was hit by a pitch with two outs. A wild pitch advanced the runners into scoring position, leading to Owen's two-out two-run single into right field.
Â
UNO took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on RBI singles by center fielder Orynn Veillon and second baseman Devin Morrill. In the sixth, a base hit to left by designated hitter Scott Crabtree led to a run when catcher Beau Bratton scored on a throwing error.
Â
Green Wave freshman Josh Bates went 3.0 innings in the start and pitched 15 strikes before his first ball to begin the game. He allowed one hit across the three scoreless frames. Freshman Connor Pellerin pitched two stanzas and allowed one unearned run and struck out four batters. Sophomore Robert Price and junior Will McAffer each tossed one shutout inning.

Tulane plays host to Houston in a three-game American Athletic Conference series this weekend at Turchin Stadium. Game times are 6:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
