Baseball Falls to UNO in Pelican Cup Series
Apr 3, 2018 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – UNO scored in the top of the ninth inning to break a tie and claim a 3-2 win over Tulane in the second game of the Pelican Cup series Tuesday evening at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Freshman first baseman David Bedgood and junior catcher Acy Owen hit solo home runs for the Green Wave (12-18). The Privateers (14-15) scored two runs in the fourth inning and a run in the ninth. John Barr (2-2) earned the win and Reeves Martin the save while senior Sam Bjorngjeld (1-2) took the loss for the Wave.
Tulane junior Will McAffer achieved an extreme baseball rarity in the fifth inning – an immaculate inning. He took the mound to begin the fifth in relief of starter Ross Massey and proceeded to strike out the side on nine pitches. He tossed a scoreless sixth and finished with four strikeouts on the night.
"Massey came out and settled the game, and it was good to see," Tulane head coach Travis Jewett said. "You don't see what McAffer did too much – nine pitches and three strikeouts. We wanted to lengthen him out a couple of innings and put him maybe in a different situation. That was good to see him do that.
"There is a difference between swinging and hitting, and we've got to start to figure out the median between the two. For the most part our success has been hard on the line to low ground to line drives."
Massey tossed three scoreless innings working around single base hits in the first two innings and an error in the third, with twin 4-6-3 double plays to end the second and third frames. Sophomore Trent Johnson followed McAffer with two perfect innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Bedgood's first career home run went out to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning after UNO scored two runs in the top of the frame. Owen tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with his second home run of the season – a shot to right center field.
UNO took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single by designated hitter Cody Ducote and an RBI double by left fielder Jay Robinson. First baseman Collin Morrill led off the ninth with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch to give UNO a 3-2 lead.
In three separate innings the Green Wave had a runner at third with less than three outs but was unable to push a run across the plate. The Wave finished with seven hits while the Privateers had six hits.
Tulane travels to Wichita State for a three-game American Athletic Conference series Friday through Sunday. Game times are 6 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
