Aug 25, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
NEW ORLEANS — Finishing with two more sweeps to win the I-10 Tournament, the Green Wave defeated Incarnate Word 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-15) and Louisiana Lafayette 3-0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-15) on Saturday at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
The I-10 Tournament's award for Most Valuable Player went to freshman outside hitter Makala Heidelberg, who was well-deserving of the honor after a standout first weekend performance with the Green Wave, finishing with a total of 15 kills and 22 digs. Junior libero Kaylie McHugh recorded 33 digs in this weekend's three matches, receiving the weekend's Defensive Most Valuable Player award, while sophomore outside hitter Lexie Douglas and freshman setter Taylor Henigsman received spots on the All-Tournament Team.
The Green Wave faced Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday night in the de facto tournament championship game, coming out with a win after a hard-fought three-set match. Tulane and ULL exchanged leads in the beginning of the first set until the home team started to gain some offensive momentum. Junior right side hitter Erika Hansel led Tulane in kills with five in the set while Douglas, senior middle hitter Dayna Kern and sophomore right side hitter Kristen Thompson each recorded three.
Set two marked a slow start for Tulane, with ULL leading by six at 19-13. Attacking errors from the Ragin' Cajuns put the Green Wave back in the game, and Heidelberg gave the Green Wave all the momentum when she made four consecutive diving digs that would eventually lead end with a kill from Douglas to close the gap to 23-21. Two consecutive kills from Douglas and Kern would put the Green Wave in the lead, and Tulane ultimately won the set 27-25. Sophomore middle hitter Markenzie Benoit led the team with six kills in set two, posting a .857 hitting percentage while also recording four block assists.
Taking the lead with a score of 8-7 in the final set, Tulane maintained its position on top throughout the rest of the match and would go on to win 25-15. Benoit led the team with four kills in the set, with a .286 hitting percentage, while Douglas added a match-leading four digs to Tulane's total of 14. Henigsman marked six assists in the third set, ending the match with a total of 23.
In Tulane's first match on Saturday against UIW, the Green Wave took the lead right at the start of set one and continued to play strong until its finish. Kern and senior middle hitter Hannah Shaw each made three kills in the first set while also recording three and two blocks, respectively. Back-to-back blocks from the home team – by Kern and junior outside hitter Erika Hansel followed by Kern and Heidelberg – closed the match for the Green Wave and solidified the win.
Heidelberg and freshman outside hitter Yvette Burcescu had standout performances in set two of their second collegiate matches. Heidelberg tallied six kills and seven digs, with a .667 hitting percentage, leading the Green Wave in all three categories. Burcescu, who recorded six kills, 13 total attacks and marked a hitting percentage of .308, scored back-to-back points twice for Tulane to put the team ahead of the Cardinals. Henigsman also demonstrated her ability on the court, leading the Green Wave with 14 assists.
Tulane held a constant lead against UIW, remaining on top for the entire third set. The Green Wave recorded 20 kills in the final set, nine of which were from Douglas. Hitting 14 total attacks, Douglas finished the set with a match-leading .500 hitting percentage. Junior outside hitter Meghan Doyle played a large defensive role to finish out the match, ending with eight digs of the team's total 18 to complete the sweep.
