GALVESTON, TEXAS – The Tulane sailing team had a successful first weekend on the road, with freshman skipper/crew Ciara Rodriguez-Horan winning all seven races against Texas A&M Galveston on Sunday to take the SEISA Women's Singlehanded Championship title.
Rodriguez-Horan's first career win for the Green Wave earned her a spot to compete in the ICSA Women's Singlehanded Championship in November, hosted by Grand Valley State in Holland, Michigan.
Freshman skipper Luke Schumann recorded a fourth place finish in the SEISA Coed Singlehanded Championship, beating out two sailors from Texas A&M Galveston to finish with a total score of 29 in the seven-race regatta.Â
"Freshman skippers Ciara [Rodriguez-Horan] and Luke [Schumann] got a good amount of experience this weekend," head coach Charles Higgins said. "Ciara is an all-around sailor, she can be a skipper and a crew and she had an opportunity to do both. Luke did quite well, he was always neck-and-neck with the leaders so that was good to see from him too."
The Olive and Blue opened the weekend with the Troy Swetman Regatta on Saturday, defeating two teams from the University of Texas and falling to three teams from Texas A&M Galveston to finish in fourth place. Junior Connor Mcavoy and Rodriguez-Horan sailed both the skipper and crew positions in the majority of the Division A races, with senior Sophie Ricker coming in to take over the crew spot in five races.
In the Division B races, senior Grace Bloomfield served as Tulane's primary crew, sailing in all twelve races. Schumann and sophomore Caelan Watts teamed up to take on the skipper role, with Schumann starting it off with the first four, handing it over to Watts for the next five and coming back to the water to sail the final two. The Green Wave's Division A team finished with 58 points while the Division B team ended with 84, totaling 142 to earn the fourth place regatta finish.
"The Troy Swetman was a great event, but it was still somewhat of a preseason for us in the sense that it was our last walk-through before we get to go up against some of the best in the country," Higgins said. "It was a great opportunity to give some underclassmen a lot of reps and get some races under their belts and a chance to get our feet wet and see where we really stand."
The Green Wave returns to New Orleans this weekend, opening its home competition with the Sugar Bowl on Saturday and Sunday.Â
