No. 2 Huskies End Green Wave's Six-Game Winning Streak
Jan 16, 2019 | Women's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – No. 2 UConn was too much for the Tulane women's basketball team on Wednesday night as the Huskies left Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse with a 75-33 victory.
The Green Wave (13-4, 3-1 American Athletic Conference) saw its six-game winning streak snapped as it moved to 0-11 lifetime against the Huskies (15-1, 4-0). The loss was also Tulane's first in league play this year.
Tulane fought with the Huskies early, with Krystal Freeman putting in two layups including one off an offensive rebound to tie the game at 4-4. But the Huskies went on a 7-0 run after that and led 11-4 at the media timeout. By the end of the quarter, their run had grown to 14-0 and their lead was 18-4 after 10 minutes of play.
UConn had expanded its lead to 24 points at halftime and never led by fewer than 22 points in the second half.
Kaila Anderson led the way for Tulane with 7 points, and Freeman had 6 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Anderson also topped the team with two assists and three steals.
Tulane was unable to generate offense all game against UConn, shooting 18 percent from the field and just 9 percent from the 3-point line (2-22). Tulane defended the 3-point line well itself, holding the Huskies to a mere 15 percent from downtown (3-19) through three quarters before UConn made four of its five attempts from deep in the fourth quarter.
The Green Wave forced the Huskies offense into 18 turnovers, tying a season high for the nation's second-ranked team. But Tulane itself committed 22 turnovers that resulted in 26 UConn points, and UConn had a 34-12 edge in points in the paint.
After a brief stop in their home arena, the Green Wave will look to start a new winning streak on the road Saturday against the league's second-place team from 2017-18. Tulane will take on USF in Tampa, Florida, at the Yuengling Center at 12 p.m. central.
