NEW ORLEANS – Tulane women's basketball will look to rebound and start a new winning streak on Saturday when they travel to Tampa, Florida, for a matchup with USF. The Green Wave and Bulls will tip off at noon central time from Yuengling Center. The game will be televised locally on Cox Sports TV or aired online through the American Digital Network.
Â
STARTING FIVE
- Tulane enters Saturday's game after having its six-game winning streak snapped with a loss to No. 2 UConn on Wednesday.
- The Green Wave are receiving two points in last week's USA Today Coaches Poll and have the third-highest RPI in The American.
- Sophomore Kaila Anderson is leading the conference with 28 total assists through four league games and was named to the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll on Monday for the first time in her career
- Tulane freshmen and sophomores have combined for 66 percent of Green Wave scoring, 64 percent of Tulane minutes and 75 percent of Tulane's assists. Tulane's underclassmen have also contributed 52 percent of the team rebounding.
- Tulane has lost its last nine contests with USF dating back to 2015. The Green Wave's last win over the Bulls was in 2009.
SERIES HISTORY – USF
- The Green Wave and Bulls have faced off 37 times in their history, with Tulane holding a narrow 19-18 lead in the all-time series.
- Since Tulane joined the American Athletic Conference in 2014-15, USF has won all nine meetings between the sides including one game in the 2015 conference tournament.
- In two games last year, USF claimed victories of 63-53 in New Orleans and 75-46 in Tampa.
- Tulane's last win against the Bulls came in 2009.
SCOUTING THE BULLS
- The Bulls, based in Tampa, Florida, are 10-7 so far this season and 1-2 in American Athletic Conference play. In the league, USF has lost to UCF and UConn while defeating Temple.
- USF has finished in the top three of The American in each of the five years it has been in the league. The Bulls were the league's No. 2 team three times.
- The Bulls will be quite shorthanded on Saturday, as the team is missing multiple top scorers due to injury. Kitija Laksa played just three games this year, averaging 16.3 points per game before an injury. Laura Ferreira has missed the last two games to injury, and she averages 15.8 points per game. Beatriz Jordao, who puts down 11.3 points per game, will also miss the rest of the season.
- The team's top scorer who will play Saturday is Sydni Harvey and her 12.7 points per game.
A QUARTER CENTURY WITH COACH
Now in her 25th year with the Green Wave women's basketball program in 2018-19, it's hard to imagine anyone else at the helm besides Coach Lisa Stockton. Her numbers are staggering: three different conferences, four conference tournament championships, two conference regular-season championships, six All-Americans, 11 NCAA Tournament berths, seven WNIT spots and a boatload of wins. No one in the history of Tulane women's basketball is even close to Stockton's career numbers.
Â
STOCKTON GETS 500
With a victory over Nicholls on December 4, Coach Lisa Stockton recorded her 500th victory at Tulane. In her 25 years with the Green Wave, Stockton is averaging 20 wins per season – and rising. She is currently the nation's 10th-longest tenured coach at a D1 school. She has more than eight times as many wins as the second-place coach in program history (Joline Matsunami, 1985-90, 60 wins).
Â
UNDERCLASSMEN OVERPERFORMING
Tulane's roster is seeing a youth movement this year 2018-19 with underclassmen getting a supermajority of minutes played, points scored and assists. Freshmen and sophomores have combined for 66 percent of Green Wave scoring, 64 percent of Tulane minutes and 75 percent of Tulane's assists. Tulane's underclassmen have also contributed 52 percent of the team rebounding.
Â
RECEIVING VOTES
For the fifth time this year, the Green Wave are in the receiving votes category of the USA Today Coaches Poll. In the poll released January 8 following a win over ECU, Tulane is earning three points in the poll. The Green Wave had earned five points in last week's poll.
Â
MANU'S BIG DAY
Kayla Manuirirangi was a huge part of the Green Wave's victory at SMU on January 12 as she tied for the team high with a season-best 17 points. The junior knocked down five 3-pointers, her highest total of the year and equaling her career best while coming two points away from tying her career high. The game saw Manuirirangi reach double-figure scoring for the fifth time this season.
Â
ANDERSON HONORED
Sophomore guard Kaila Anderson has been on fire lately, as she is currently leading The American in assists in league games with 28. Anderson's 7.0 assists per conference game tops the league, and her assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.8 is second in the league. For her excellent passing last week, Anderson earned a spot on the league's Honor Roll on Monday. In four conference games, she has at least eight assists three times. Her career high for assists in a game is nine.
Â
WYATT UP TO EIGHTH
With four blocks at SMU on January 12, senior Harlyn Wyatt rocketed up the Tulane record book to eighth all-time in program history. Wyatt now has 91 total blocks in her four-year career, and she moved past Angela Rust and her 90 career blocks with her final swat against the Mustangs.
CAREER NUMBERS WATCH
Coming up soon:
- Tatyana Lofton needs 10 more points for 200 at Tulane.
- Kaila Anderson will reach 100 rebounds with 10 more.
Tulane will have a week without a game for the first time since league play started, as the team does not play again until January 26. On that date, Tulane will honor Coach Lisa Stockton for her 500 Tulane victories and 25 years in charge of the team as it faces Wichita State at 2 p.m.
