Wichita State Uses Big Runs to Beat Women's Basketball
Jan 26, 2019 | Women's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane women's basketball fell behind by double digits early and could not climb out of a hole in a 62-44 loss against Wichita State at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.
The Green Wave (13-6, 3-3 American Athletic Conference) trailed the Shockers (8-11, 1-5) by 16 in the second quarter and fought all the way back to get within 2 points in the third, but Wichita State followed that with a 14-0 run to build a lead too large for Tulane to overcome.
Krystal Freeman led Tulane in scoring with 12 points on 5 of 9 shooting, and she was also Tulane's top rebounder with six boards. No other Tulane player had more than 6 points. Senior Harlyn Wyatt topped the team with two locks while Tatyana Lofton had a team-high four assists. Erin Gutierrez had a team-best three steals and also had three assists.
Tulane did not attempt a free throw until the fourth quarter while Wichita State finished 16 of 20 from the charity stripe. The Shockers got 15 second-chance points thanks to 13 offensive rebounds and outscored Tulane in the paint 26-14.
For the game's first 15 minutes, the Green Wave could not buy a bucket. The team started out 2 of 12 from the field in the first quarter, and Wichita State was able to build an 11-4 lead through the first 10 minutes. Early in the second quarter, the team fell behind even further when the Shockers started things on an 11-2 run to make it 22-6.
From there, though, the shots finally started falling. Dynah Jones hit a 3-pointer, Wyatt drained a jumper, Cheatham sank a 3 and Freeman followed with back-to-back baskets. All of a sudden, Tulane was on a 12-2 run and had cut the Shockers' lead to just 6 points. Tulane entered halftime with all the momentum and trailed just 26-20 after being down by as many as 16.
In the third quarter, Cheatham and Anderson hit 3-pointers early and a Freeman layup got Tulane within 2 points at 30-28 with 6:44 remaining in the quarter. From there, though, Wichita State had its 14-0 run that killed any Tulane momentum.
Tulane has its next two games on the road, as the team will travel to Memphis on Wednesday and ECU on Saturday. The Green Wave and Tigers will tip off at 6 p.m. at Elma Roane Fieldhouse on Wednesday.
