NEW ORLEANS – The Green Wave are back on the road this week looking to snap a three-game losing skid when they travel to Memphis on Wednesday night. Tulane and the Tigers will meet at 6 p.m. at Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
STARTING FIVE
- Tulane enters Wednesday's game on a three-game losing streak for the first time this season. Before losing three straight, Tulane had won six consecutive games.
- Sophomore Krystal Freeman continues to excel on offense as she scored in double figures against Wichita State on Wednesday. She leads Tulane with 12.9 points per game after scoring just 1.9 per game as a freshman.
- Tulane's 3-point defense this season has been stellar, as the team is eighth in the nation in that category, allowing opponents to hit just 25.2 percent of their 3-point attempts.
- Tulane freshmen and sophomores have combined for 66 percent of Green Wave scoring, 63 percent of Tulane minutes and 74 percent of Tulane's assists. Tulane's underclassmen have also contributed 54 percent of the team rebounding.
- Tulane ended Memphis' season in 2018, defeating the Tigers in the opening round of the conference tournament in Uncasville, Connecticut.
- Memphis and Tulane have a long history that dates back to 1979, and the Tigers hold a 27-20 edge in the teams' 47 combined games against one another.
- The series has been fairly split in recent years with Memphis and Tulane going 5-5 in the last 10 games going back to 2012.
- Last year, Memphis defeated Tulane 73-60 in Elma Roane Fieldhouse, but the Green Wave got revenge with a 76-64 victory in the American Athletic Conference Tournament's first round to end the Tigers' season.
- The Tigers, based in Memphis, Tennessee, are 8-11 so far this season and 3-3 in conference play. In league action, Memphis has defeated Wichita State, ECU and USF while losing to UCF, Tulsa and Cincinnati.
- Memphis is strong at defending the 3-pointer, allowing teams to make just 25.4 percent of its attempts from downtown. But the Tigers are even worse offensively from the 3-point line, making just 1 out of every 4 attempts.
- The Tigers have two players in double-figure scoring this season: Jamirah Shutes (12.8 points per game) and Alana Davis (12.3). Davis is also the team's top rebounder with 8.0 boards per game.
- Passing the ball, Memphis is led by Taylor Barnes and her 3.5 assists per game. Barnes also leads Memphis with 33 total steals.
Now in her 25th year with the Green Wave women's basketball program in 2018-19, it's hard to imagine anyone else at the helm besides Coach Lisa Stockton. Her numbers are staggering: three different conferences, four conference tournament championships, two conference regular-season championships, six All-Americans, 11 NCAA Tournament berths, seven WNIT spots and a boatload of wins. No one in the history of Tulane women's basketball is even close to Stockton's career numbers.
STOCKTON GETS 500
With a victory over Nicholls on December 4, Coach Lisa Stockton recorded her 500th victory at Tulane. In her 25 years with the Green Wave, Stockton is averaging 20 wins per season – and rising. She is currently the nation's 10th-longest tenured coach at a D1 school. She has more than eight times as many wins as the second-place coach in program history (Joline Matsunami, 1985-90, 60 wins). She will be honored for her 500th win Saturday against Wichita State.
UNDERCLASSMEN OVERPERFORMING
Tulane's roster is seeing a youth movement this year 2018-19 with underclassmen getting a supermajority of minutes played, points scored and assists. Freshmen and sophomores have combined for 66 percent of Green Wave scoring, 63 percent of Tulane minutes and 74 percent of Tulane's assists. Tulane's underclassmen have also contributed 54 percent of the team rebounding.
SHOOTING, REBOUNDING SLUMP
The Green Wave are on a three-game losing streak currently thanks in large part to a huge shooting slump. Through the season's first 16 games, Tulane shot 43.1 percent from the floor including 37.5 percent from 3-point range. In the Green Wave's three straight losses, the team is averaging 27.0 percent from the field and 21.2 percent from downtown. During the first 16 games, Tulane had a neutral rebounding margin with exactly as many rebounds as its opponent. In the three straight losses, Tulane is averaging 12 rebounds per game fewer than the opposition.
LOFTON STARTS AGAIN
Tatyana Lofton got her second start of the season on Saturday against Wichita State, playing 23 minutes. The start was just the seventh of her Tulane career. In the game, Lofton set a season high with four assists.
SO YOU WANT TO BE A COACH
Senior Harlyn Wyatt earned a spot in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's "So You Want To Be A Coach" program on January 23, marking the fifth consecutive year that a Green Wave player will participate in the program. Wyatt is one of 60 players in the country who will take part in the program and is the only player selected from the American Athletic Conference. Selected players will travel to Tampa, Florida, to take part in the three-day workshop with speakers provided by WeCOACH on April 3-5.
THREE-POINT DEFENSE
The Green Wave have done an excellent job defending the 3-point line so far this season. Tulane opponents are shooting just .252 from downtown this year, a number that puts Tulane eighth in the country. The Green Wave have allowed opponents to make 30 percent of their 3-pointers just five times so far this year and have held opponents under 20 percent from long range four times.
FREEMAN SCORES BIG
Sophomore Krystal Freeman led Tulane in scoring for the ninth time this season on Saturday against Wichita State, putting up 12 points to be the team's only double-figure scorer. Freeman has now recorded double-figure scoring in 15 of Tulane's 19 games this year and has reached 15 points in nine games. The second-year star averaged just 1.9 points per game as a freshman but is leading Tulane with 12.9 points per game in 2018-19.
WYATT BLOCKING SHOTS
Senior Harlyn Wyatt had another great blocking day on Saturday against Wichita State, as she has two total blocks. Wyatt is now eighth all-time in team history with 94 blocks and had a career-high six blocks against Nicholls on December 4. That number tied her for ninth all-time in a single game at Tulane. Wyatt already has 23 blocks this year. Her single-season career high is 30, and she is just four away from 100 in her career.
HOLDING THE LEAD
Tulane has done a tremendous job this season of getting out front and staying there. The team is a perfect 12-0 when it leads games with five minutes left, 11-0 when it leads after the third quarter, 11-0 when it leads at halftime and 9-0 when it leads after the first quarter.
DEFENSE DOES IT
The Green Wave defense has been strong through 19 games this season, giving up fewer than 60 points 12 times and fewer than 50 points four times. On December 30 against FAMU, Tulane allowed just 34 points. The team's scoring defense of 57.2 points per game ranks 36th nationally, and opponents' .355 field goal percentage ranks 26th in the nation.
SPREADING THE BALL AROUND
On the 2017-18 roster, only six players averaged at least 4.0 points per game. This season so far, eight players are averaging at least 4.0 points per game.
ROLLING DEEP
Through 19 games this year, the Green Wave bench has been a huge part of the offense. Green Wave bench players have combined 22.5 points per game in 2018-19, and Tulane opponents have averaged just 12.6 points per game off the bench.
CAREER NUMBERS WATCH
Coming up soon:
- Tatyana Lofton needs 4 more points for 200 at Tulane.
- Kaila Anderson will reach 100 rebounds with 7 more and 200 points with 12 more.
- Krystal Freeman will reach 300 points when she scores 12 more.
- Kayla Manuirirangi is six made 3-pointers shy of 100.
- Harlyn Wyatt needs four more blocks for 100.
The Green Wave stay on the road for their next contest on Saturday when they travel to Greenville, North Carolina to take on ECU. The Pirates and Green Wave are scheduled for a 4 p.m. central tipoff on the American Digital Network.
