NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane women's basketball team will look to get off to a 2-0 start in American Athletic Conference play on Tuesday night when it heads northeast to Philadelphia. The Green Wave will take on the Temple Owls with tipoff set for 6 p.m. central.
STARTING FIVE
- Tulane is tied for the longest active winning streak among American Athletic Conference teams right now as it enters Tuesday's game against Temple with four straight wins. Only Cincinnati equals that number.
- The Green Wave are receiving two points in this the most recent USA Today Coaches Poll available before publication.
- Sophomore Krystal Freeman came one rebound away from tying a Tulane record when she posted 20 boards against ECU on Saturday. Freeman's 20 boards were still a career high and along with her 17 points was part of her third career double-double.
- Freshmen and sophomores have combined for 67 percent of Green Wave scoring, 65 percent of Tulane minutes and 74 percent of Tulane's assists. Tulane's underclassmen have also contributed 56 percent of the team rebounding.
- Kaila Anderson tied her career high with nine assists on Saturday, and Anderson's individual assist total matched the entirety of ECU's team.
- Tulane and Temple have a short but intense history, with Temple holding a 6-2 all-time edge in the series.
- When the teams met last season, Tulane broke a five-game losing streak against the Owls with a 69-65 win in New Orleans.
- In that game last year, Kolby Morgan scored 25 points for Tulane while Meredith Schulte scored 14 and Kayla Manuirirangi added 11.
- The Owls, based out of Philadelphia, have a record of 4-9 so far this season but have played one of the harder schedules in The American. Temple's slate so far has included losses to Miami, DePaul, South Carolina and Ole Miss.
- Temple's four wins in 2018-19 have come against Delaware State, Saint Joseph's, Iona and La Salle.
- Mia Davis has been a scoring and rebounding machine for the Owls, picking up 19.3 points per game and 9.2 rebounds per game to lead the team in both categories.
- Back from a torn ACL last season, Alliya Butts is averaging 15.0 points per game and leads Temple with 58 assists.
Now in her 25th year with the Green Wave women's basketball program in 2018-19, it's hard to imagine anyone else at the helm besides Coach Lisa Stockton. Her numbers are staggering: three different conferences, four conference tournament championships, two conference regular-season championships, six All-Americans, 11 NCAA Tournament berths, seven WNIT spots and a boatload of wins. No one in the history of Tulane women's basketball is even close to Stockton's career numbers.
STOCKTON GETS 500
With a victory over Nicholls on December 4, Coach Lisa Stockton recorded her 500th victory at Tulane. In her 25 years with the Green Wave, Stockton is averaging 20 wins per season – and rising. She is currently the nation's 10th-longest tenured coach at a D1 school. She has more than eight times as many wins as the second-place coach in program history (Joline Matsunami, 1985-90, 60 wins).
RECEIVING VOTES
For the fourth time this year, the Green Wave are in the receiving votes category of the USA Today Coaches Poll. In the poll released January 1 following wins over FAMU and Central Michigan, Tulane is earning a season-best two points in the poll. Tulane last received two points in the poll on Feb. 20, 2017. The Green Wave had earned one vote in three previous polls this season.
FREEMAN GETS GLASS
Krystal Freeman had a mammoth performance rebounding against ECU on Saturday. Freeman scored 17 points and grabbed 20 rebounds for her third career double-double, and those 20 rebounds tie for the second-highest total in program history. Twenty rebounds was also the most rebounds at Tulane since Brett Benzio had 20 in 2011. The school record for rebounds in a game is 21. Freeman's rebounds were perfectly balanced Saturday as she had 10 on the offensive glass and 10 on the defensive glass.
ANDERSON PASSING WELL
Sophomore guard Kaila Anderson had a career day against ECU, picking up nine assists to tie her career high. Not only did that number tie her career high, but Anderson's individual assist total matched the entirety of ECU's team. Anderson's 64 total assists this year ranks second in The American and 72nd nationally.
CHEATHAM HITS 300
Sophomore Sierra Cheatham ended her freshman year with 156 total points, and she's already just 4 points away from equaling that mark this year. Cheatham has 152 points in 2018-19 so far and reached 300 career points against ECU. She was second on the team with 12 points in that game, and Cheatham has scored in double figures seven times so far this year
WYATT GETTING CONSISTENT
Harlyn Wyatt had a slow offensive start to the year, averaging just 4.0 points per game through the first 10 games of the season and scoring in double figures just one time in that span. But in the last four games, Wyatt has reached double figures three times and is averaging 10.0 points per game. The senior had 12 points against Texas State on December 22, 14 against Central Michigan on December 29 and 10 against ECU on Saturday.
WELLS DOES WELL
Junior Maddison Wells had her most impressive showing of the year against ECU on Saturday, scoring a season-best 7 points while grabbing five boards and shooting 3 of 3 from the field. Wells has appeared in just four games this year and averaged only 0.7 points per game in her three previous outings.
UNDERCLASSMEN OVERPERFORMING
Tulane's roster is seeing a youth movement this year 2018-19 with underclassmen getting a supermajority of minutes played, points scored and assists. Freshmen and sophomores have combined for 67 percent of Green Wave scoring, 64 percent of Tulane minutes and 75 percent of Tulane's assists. Tulane's underclassmen have also contributed 56 percent of the team rebounding.
CAREER NUMBERS WATCH
Against ECU:
- Sierra Cheatham scored her 300th point.
- Kaila Anderson scored her 150th point.
- Meredith Schulte will reach 400 career rebounds with six more.
- Erin Gutierrez will eclipse 50 assists with one more.
- Kayla Manuirirangi is 10 points away from 400.
- Krystal Freeman is two defensive rebounds shy of 100 and three made field goals away from 100.
The Green Wave will stay on the road this weekend, heading to Dallas to take on SMU. The Mustangs and Green Wave are scheduled for a 12 p.m. tip Saturday.
