HARAHAN, La. – No. 14 Tulane Bowling had an impressive outing on the final day of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational. Tulane started the day seeded tenth but took down Jackson State, Stephen F. Austin, and Lincoln Memorial en route to a seventh-place finish.
Tulane ended the tournament with an 8-2 record, 12,406 total pin-fall, and 185.2 average pin-fall. Sam Houston State won the tournament, posting an 11-2 record, 12,856 total pin-fall, and 197.8 average pin-fall.
"We improved every match today," said Head Coach Hayley Veitch. "It was exciting to see the team dynamic back again and the supporters were really into it as well which definitely helped us boost our confidence. We couldn't have asked for a better day. After a rocky day yesterday, I didn't know how they were going to come back, but they did an exceptional job."
None of the troubles that seemed to plague the Wave during traditional play were on display Sunday as the team had their best performance of the weekend. Tulane averaged 193.18 pins per game on Sunday, a 16.82 point improvement over yesterday's average.
Tulane opened bracket play against the ninth seeded Jackson State Tigers. The Wave jumped out to a convincing early lead, winning games one and two 191-127 and 203-178, respectively. Although the Tigers claimed game three 190-178, Tulane still seemed poised to win it all when they put up 202 in game four. But the Olive and Blue found themselves struggling to convert spares throughout games five and six, and Jackson State was able to force a seventh. With the match on the line, the Wave knocked down 192 pins to claim the game and the match.
With the win over Jackson State, Tulane moved up the bracket to face the Stephen F. Austin LadyJacks. The two teams traded blows, with SFA landing the first punch. The Texans claimed game one 198-195, but Tulane fought back to take games two (200 to 190) and three (188 to 182). The team stumbled in game four, failing to convert spares and allowing SFA to tie the series at two each. But Tulane wasn't going to stay down long. Buoyed by Junior Madison McCall's three-strike tenth frame, the Wave won the next game 211-188. The team clinched the match in game six with a commanding performance that saw the team string together five strikes in a row en route to a 237-188 win.
Tulane carried that momentum into its final match of the day, sweeping the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters. The Greenies won the first game 214-197 and never let up from there, winning game two 213-178, game three 200-164, and game four 220-148.
"This was definitely a learning experience. This is the first tournament out and with such a young team they had to get their feet wet and understand what we have to do," said Veitch. "Moving forward, we have some things that we need to work on, but next time we're going to be a lot bigger and better."
Tulane will return to action Friday November 1st at the Track Kat Klash hosted by the newly crowned Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational Champions Sam Houston State. The event will feature many familiar faces including No. 17 Louisiana Tech, No. 8 North Carolina A&T, and No. 3 Stephen F. Austin.
