NEW ORLEANS, La. – The 14th-ranked Tulane bowling team returns to action this weekend, heading to the Emerald Bowl in Houston, Texas, for the Track Kat Klash hosted by Sam Houston State.
The 16-team event gets underway Friday morning with five five-game Baker contests, moving to Saturday's five traditional team matches and Sunday's bracket finals to determine the final standings and team champion. The Green Wave are coming off of a seventh-place finish at the 2019 Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational two weeks ago, as the team rolled through all three of their opponents on the final day to claim the team's first top 10 finish of the season.
"It's always exciting to compete, and this weekend we have a chance to improve on where we finished in our home tournament and get better as the season continues," head coach Hayley Veitch said. "The last two weeks we have spent time focusing on our areas of growth and thinking outside of the box. By challenging ourselves we will be better prepared for whatever we are faced with."
At Colonial Lanes, Tulane knocked down 12,406 total pins during the invitational, with a pin average of 185.2. The Green Wave went 8-5 in the event after going 4-1 on the first day and rebounding on Sunday after going 1-4 in the traditional matches on Saturday.
Freshman Amelia Vasquez led the team individually, finishing 24th after knocking down 945 pins for an average of 189. Junior Madison McCall finished 39th knocking down 899 pins for a 179.80 average.
Kylie Frick made her Tulane debut and finished 44th, knocking down 870 pins for an average of 174, while senior Isabelle Lee earned a new career high with a 257 game against Grambling in the final traditional match on Saturday.
A total of 11 ranked teams dot the field for the Track Kat Klash, with six teams comprising the bulk of the top 10. Stephen F. Austin, McKendree, Nebraska, ASBCBI champion and host Sam Houston State, Arkansas State, Maryland Eastern Shore and North Carolina A&T round out the top 10 field.
Tulane, Louisiana Tech, Duquesne and Youngstown State round out the rest of the NTCA ranked teams, with Alabama State, Jackson State, Prairie View A&M, Southern, Texas Southern and Upper Iowa rounding out the rest of the field.
"This tournament always features some of the best teams in the country and this year is no different," Veitch said. "As long as we stay loose and believe in our abilities, I know we can have another positive outcome this weekend."
