Oona Bruss Named to Tulane’s Newcomb Scholars List

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Tulane freshman middle blocker Oona Bruss has been selected as one of 20 undergraduate students named to the Newcomb Scholars cohort it was announced on Wednesday.
The Newcomb Scholars Program selects twenty intellectually curious and motivated undergraduates each year to participate in an academically rigorous interdisciplinary learning experience about feminist leadership. Together, the Scholars create a community of diverse thinkers, leaders, and activists, which challenges and empowers them to be innovative and compassionate feminist leaders in the 21st century.
"Oona is a very motivated and intelligent student-athlete," head coach Jim Barnes said. "She has added a great dimension to our team with her unselfish service and leadership on a daily basis. We are all so proud of her!"
Bruss, a freshman from Berkeley, California, will have the opportunity through the Scholars program to learn about women's leadership and cultivate leadership skills, consider how gender intersects with scholarship, leadership, and social change and develop the research and writing skills necessary for good scholarship, among others.
The only small cohort honors program for Tulane University undergraduates, Newcomb Scholars offers a unique opportunity to build feminist scholarship and leadership skills.
Tulane returns home this weekend to take on the Wichita State Shockers and Tulsa Golden Hurricane this Friday and Sunday in Fogelman in Devlin.
