NEW ORLEANS – On the road once more, the Green Wave women's basketball team will seek its sixth consecutive victory over ECU when the teams meet at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. The game will be broadcast live locally on Cox Sports TV and also online through the American Digital Network and is set for a 4 p.m. central tipoff.
STARTING FIVE
- The Green Wave got back in the win column Wednesday with a 62-61 victory at Memphis in overtime. Tulane is now 2-0 in overtime games this season.
- Sophomore Krystal Freeman was stellar in the game in Memphis, scoring 16 points and adding 10 boards for her fourth double-double of the season. Her layup at the buzzer in regulation tied the game and sent it to overtime.
- Tatyana Lofton scored a career-high 17 points at Memphis and recorded her fourth double-figure scoring game of the season.
- Tulane's 3-point defense this season has been stellar, as the team is fifth in the nation in that category, allowing opponents to hit just 24.7 percent of their 3-point attempts.
- Tulane freshmen and sophomores have combined for 66 percent of Green Wave scoring, 64 percent of Tulane minutes and 74 percent of Tulane's assists. Tulane's underclassmen have also contributed 54 percent of the team rebounding.
SERIES HISTORY – ECU
- Tulane and ECU have squared off 24 times in their history with the Green Wave holding a commanding 18-6 lead.
- Tulane has won the last five games in the series dating back to January 2016.
- When they teams met earlier this year, Krystal Freeman set a career high with 20 rebounds while also scoring 17 points in a 68-57 Green Wave win.
SCOUTING THE PIRATES
- The Pirates, based out of Greenville, N.C., are 10-10 so far this season with a record of 1-6 in American Athletic Conference play. ECU has lost eight of its last nine games.
- ECU's lone victory in league play came against Wichita State on January 9, though the Shockers have since beaten the Pirates on January 29.
- On offense, Lashonda Monk is the team's top talent with 13.4 points per game. Raven Johnson is also in double figures with 13.1 points per game. Rebounding, Johnson once again leads the way with 6.4 boards per game.
- As a team, the Pirates have 236 steals, good for 11th in the nation. They are also 13th in the nation in turnovers forced with 22.1 per game. They are one of the country's worst 3-point teams, though, shooting just 24.2 percent from beyond the arc.
A QUARTER CENTURY WITH COACH
Now in her 25th year with the Green Wave women's basketball program in 2018-19, it's hard to imagine anyone else at the helm besides Coach Lisa Stockton. Her numbers are staggering: three different conferences, four conference tournament championships, two conference regular-season championships, six All-Americans, 11 NCAA Tournament berths, seven WNIT spots and a boatload of wins. No one in the history of Tulane women's basketball is even close to Stockton's career numbers.
STOCKTON GETS 500
With a victory over Nicholls on December 4, Coach Lisa Stockton recorded her 500th victory at Tulane. In her 25 years with the Green Wave, Stockton is averaging 20 wins per season – and rising. She is currently the nation's 10th-longest tenured coach at a D1 school. She has more than eight times as many wins as the second-place coach in program history (Joline Matsunami, 1985-90, 60 wins). She will be honored for her 500th win Saturday against Wichita State.
UNDERCLASSMEN OVERPERFORMING
Tulane's roster is seeing a youth movement this year 2018-19 with underclassmen getting a supermajority of minutes played, points scored and assists. Freshmen and sophomores have combined for 66 percent of Green Wave scoring, 64 percent of Tulane minutes and 74 percent of Tulane's assists. Tulane's underclassmen have also contributed 54 percent of the team rebounding.
FREEMAN GETS ANOTHER DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Krystal Freeman posted the fourth double-double of her career in Wednesday's overtime victory at Memphis. The sophomore grabbed 10 rebounds and put up 16 points, helping Tulane get to overtime by hitting a buzzer-beating layup in regulation to tie the game. Freeman previously had double-doubles of 22 points/11 rebounds, 17 points/10 rebounds and 17 points/20 rebounds.
LOFTON SETS NEW HIGH
Tatyana Lofton was on fire Wednesday at Memphis, leading Tulane with 17 points to help the Green Wave pull out a victory. Her 3-pointer in the extra period gave Tulane an early lead, and her 17 points proved to be a career high. Lofton has now scored in double figures four times this season.
JONES GETS A START
Freshman Dynah Jones got her second career start on Wednesday at Memphis, marking her first start since the season opener against Texas Southern on November 8. Jones finished Wednesday's game with 7 points – the third-highest total on the roster – and added two rebounds, three assists and two steals.
OVERTIME WINNERS
The Green Wave are not frequent participants of overtime games, having played just four overtime games in the last six years before this season. Tulane has now won two overtime games in the same season for the first time since 2013-14 when it won three. Tulane's victory on Wednesday was its first road overtime victory since Jan. 26, 2017, at Cincinnati. The Green Wave previously defeated Texas State in overtime at home on December 22.
WINNING AT ELMA ROANE
Wednesday's victory at Elma Roane Fieldhouse was a rare one, as Tulane had not defeated Memphis in its home gym since 2009. The Green Wave's last victory in Memphis against the Tigers came during the 2012 Conference USA Tournament, but that game was played at FedEx Forum, not Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Tulane had lost four consecutive games at Elma Roane Fieldhouse before Wednesday.
THREE-POINT DEFENSE
The Green Wave have done an excellent job defending the 3-point line so far this season. Tulane opponents are shooting just .247 from downtown this year, a number that puts Tulane fifth in the country. The Green Wave have allowed opponents to make 30 percent of their 3-pointers just five times so far this year and have held opponents under 20 percent from long range five times.
CAREER NUMBERS WATCH
At Memphis:
- Tatyana Lofton scored her 200th Tulane point.
- Krystal Freeman got to 300 career points.
- Kaila Anderson will reach 100 rebounds with six more and 200 points with 7 more.
- Kayla Manuirirangi is six made 3-pointers shy of 100.
- Harlyn Wyatt needs four more blocks for 100.
- Lofton is nine rebounds away from 100.
NEXT UP
Tulane returns home for a midweek game on ESPN3 against South Florida on Wednesday. Tipoff between the Bulls and Green Wave will take place at 7 p.m. at Fogelman in Devlin.
