Gulum Rolls Program’s First 300 as Bowling Finishes Eighth in Florida

ORLANDO, Florida – Tulane senior Tiera Gulum became the first Green Wave bowler in program history to roll a perfect 300 game to highlight an eighth-place finish for the ninth-ranked team in the country at the Sunshine State Winter Classic this weekend in Orlando.

Gulum, who's previous career high game was 257 against Saint Francis back in 2017, rolled the 300 on Saturday against eventual tournament champion Stephen F. Austin as she helped catapult the Green Wave from 10^th after one day of competition to fifth by the end of day two. The New York native finished 12^th individually by knocking down 998 total pins for a pin average of 199.60.

It was solid weekend overall for Tulane bowlers, as the team had four members finish in the top 25 individually. Led by Gulum, Isabelle Lee finished 19^th, Crystal Singh finished 23^rd and Madison McCall finished 25^th. While only competing in two matches on Saturday, senior Hailee Hammond rolled two of her best games of the season in succession in tying her career high with a 245 game against Nebraska and then setting a new career mark with a 257 game against Sacred Heart.

Tulane finished the tournament knocking down 12,601 total pins over the course of the three-day event, holding a pin average of 188.1. The team ended the Sunshine State Winter Classic on a tough note, dropping all three bracket final matches on Sunday to finish with an overall record of 5-8.

The opening match on Sunday pitted Tulane with a rematch against Lincoln Memorial, with the opposition making quick work of the Green Wave in four games 204-166, 198-195, 202-168, 221-133. In the next match, the squad dropped a 4-3 (170-167, 160-200, 162-184, 191-223, 177-163, 192-188, 186-160) heartbreaker to Maryville.

In the finale, Tulane pushed UAB to the limit but dropped a 4-2 (212-221, 189-156, 173-182, 225-183, 225-201, 206-140) decision to the Blazers to finish in eighth and secure the team's seventh top 10 result of the season.

"A tough weekend on the lanes. We didn't execute shots well enough to keep up with the field. The team performed well on Saturday with the help of Tiera's 300 game and Hailee's 251 average for the last two games," head coach Hayley Veitch said. I am proud of the seniors for tepping up. Overall we need to get mentally stronger to perform to our potential."

By the end of Saturday the squad was 5-5 overall, as the team knocked down 4,907 pins which was the second most among all participating teams on the afternoon. The Green Wave rolled a pair of games knocking down well over 1,000 pins, those coming against the Ladyjacks and Sacred Heart.

Tulane's wins that day would come thanks to a 925-921 win over Maryville in the first traditional match of the day and 1,059-958 victory over SHU in the final one.

The Green Wave sat in 10^th place after the first day of competition completed on Friday in Orlando, going 3-2 in Baker matches and knocking down a total of 4,664 pins. The team earned a 998-978 win over Youngstown State, 955-869 win over Florida A&M and 983-573 win over Bethune-Cookman.

Tulane will wrap up its stretch of three competitions in three weeks by participating in the SFA Ladyjack Invitational next weekend in Houston, Texas.
