NEW ORLEANS – It's a Blue Out at Fogelman in Devlin on Wednesday night as your Green Wave women's basketball team takes on second-place UCF at 7 p.m. The game will air live on ESPN3.
The first 150 fans will get blue T-shirts, and fans can also win flowers, chocolate and other Valentine's Day items. Tulane will also honor its student-athletes who have earned a 3.0 GPA at halftime of the game.
STARTING FIVE
- Tulane enters Wednesday night's game having lost six of its last seven contests and with a 4-6 record in the American Athletic Conference. The Green Wave are tied for sixth in the league standings.
- Krystal Freeman continues to roll for Tulane, recording her third double-double in the last four games with a 17-point, 10-rebound effort in a loss at Tulsa on Saturday.
- Senior Tatyana Lofton has played very well lately, tying her career high with 17 points at Tulsa on Saturday and reaching double-figure scoring in three of the last four games.
- Freshman Dynah Jones has started the last four games after not starting for the previous 18. She has double-figure scoring in two of her four recent starts.
- Tulane's underclassmen have combined for 67 percent of Green Wave scoring, 64 percent of Tulane minutes, 74 percent of Tulane's assists and 54 percent of the team rebounding.
SERIES HISTORY – UCF
- The Green Wave and Knights have squared off 21 times in their history with Tulane holding a narrow 12-9 edge in the series. UCF, though, has won three consecutive games dating back to 2017.
- Tulane's last win in the series came in 2016 in Orlando.
- Last season, UCF beat the Green Wave 59-51 in the teams' only meeting in Orlando.
SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS
- The Knights, based in Orlando, Florida, are currently the second-best team in the American Athletic Conference and hold a very strong season record of 20-3. The team is 9-1 in conference play with its only defeat coming at the hands of top seed UConn.
- Kay Kay Wright has done it all for UCF this year, averaging a team-best 17.9 points per game while also topping the team with 89 total assists. Wright also leads the team in steals with 45.
- Nyala Shuler is the Knights' top rebounder with 7.4 boards per contest.
- Nationally as of Sunday evening, UCF has an RPI of 14 and is 13th in the nation in scoring defense. The Knights allow opponents to score an average of just 55.1 points per game.
A QUARTER CENTURY WITH COACH
Now in her 25th year with the Green Wave women's basketball program in 2018-19, it's hard to imagine anyone else at the helm besides Coach Lisa Stockton. Her numbers are staggering: three different conferences, four conference tournament championships, two conference regular-season championships, six All-Americans, 11 NCAA Tournament berths, seven WNIT spots and a boatload of wins. No one in the history of Tulane women's basketball is even close to Stockton's career numbers.
#LOCKEDINFORSTOCKTON
With a victory over Nicholls on December 4, Coach Lisa Stockton recorded her 500th victory at Tulane. In her 25 years with the Green Wave, Stockton is averaging 20 wins per season – and rising. She is currently the nation's 10th-longest tenured coach at a D1 school. She has more than eight times as many wins as the second-place coach in program history (Joline Matsunami, 1985-90, 60 wins). She was honored for her 500th win on January 26 against Wichita State.
UNDERCLASSMEN OVERPERFORMING
Tulane's roster is seeing a youth movement this year 2018-19 with underclassmen getting a supermajority of minutes played, points scored and assists. Freshmen and sophomores have combined for 67 percent of Green Wave scoring, 64 percent of Tulane minutes and 74 percent of Tulane's assists. Tulane's underclassmen have also contributed 54 percent of the team rebounding.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE MACHINE
For the third time in four games, Krystal Freeman recorded a double-double in Tulane's game at Tulsa on February 10. This time, she tied for the team lead with 17 points and added 10 rebounds. On February 2 at ECU, she tied a career high with 22 points while adding 12 rebounds. On January 30 at Memphis, Freeman put up 16 points and 10 rebounds. She now has six double-doubles this season. Freeman previously had double-doubles of 22 points/11 rebounds, 17 points/10 rebounds and 17 points/20 rebounds.
LOFTON TIES HER BEST
Senior guard Tatyana Lofton tied the best scoring game in her Tulane career at Tulsa on Saturday, putting up 17 points to tie for the team lead with Krystal Freeman. Lofton has been excellent on offense since the end of January, reaching double figures in three of Tulane's last four games and hitting 17 points twice. On Saturday at Tulsa, Lofton also tied her season high with five made field goals and set a new season best with seven rebounds.
MANU BACK ON TRACK
After shooting poorly from the 3-point line the last few games, junior guard Kayla Manuirirangi may have gotten back on track Saturday at Tulsa. Manu knocked down three 3-pointers, her highest total since making five at SMU on January 12. Manu's 11 points in the game was also her highest total since scoring 17 at SMU. She had made at least three 3-pointers in a game five times in the 2018 half of the schedule but just once before Saturday in the 2019 portion.
CAREER NUMBERS WATCH
Against Tulsa:
- Tatyana Lofton got her 100th rebound.
- Kaila Anderson will reach 100 rebounds with two more and 200 points with 2 more.
- Kayla Manuirirangi is three made 3-pointers shy of 100.
- Erin Gutierrez needs 6 more points for 100.
- Meredith Schulte's 100th career free throw will occur when she makes two more.
- Harlyn Wyatt is 14 points away from 700.
