STARTING FIVE
- Tulane comes into Saturday's game against Memphis following a big win over league No. 2 team UCF on Wednesday night. Tulane had lost six of seven prior to beating UCF.
- Erin Gutierrez was one of the stories of the UCF game, getting her first career start and impressing with a career-high 10 assists. She also had a game-winning pair of free throws with three seconds remaining.
- Krystal Freeman is one of the most improved players in the conference this year and set a career high with 25 points against UCF while adding 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the year.
- Tulane is 8-4 so far at home in 2018-19. The Green Wave have never posted a single-season home record below .500 in Lisa Stockton's 24 full years as the coach.
- Tulane's underclassmen have combined for 67 percent of Green Wave scoring, 64 percent of Tulane minutes, 74 percent of Tulane's assists and 54 percent of the team rebounding.                               Â
- Memphis and Tulane have a long history that dates back to 1979, and the Tigers hold a 27-21 edge in the teams' 48 combined games against one another.
- Last year, the Green Wave got ended Memphis' season with a 76-64 victory in the American Athletic Conference Tournament's first round.
- This year, Tulane won 62-61 in overtime in late-January at Memphis with Krystal Freeman hitting a buzzer-beating layup to force overtime.Â
- The Tigers, based in Memphis, Tennessee, hold a 9-15 overall record this season and are 4-7 in the American Athletic Conference.
- Their league wins have come against Wichita State, ECU, USF and Tulsa, but they are currently on a three-game losing streak that includes a 20-point blowout loss to Cincinnati in Memphis on Wednesday.
- Jamirah Shutes is the team's top scorer with 13.7 points per game this season, and Alana Davis is the team's best rebounder with 8.3 boards per game. Davis also scores in double figures to the tune of 12.2 points per game.
- Gazmyne Herndon leads the Tigers with 65 total assists on the season and Brianna Porter is the team's top blocker with 22 total this year.
Now in her 25th year with the Green Wave women's basketball program in 2018-19, it's hard to imagine anyone else at the helm besides Coach Lisa Stockton. Her numbers are staggering: three different conferences, four conference tournament championships, two conference regular-season championships, six All-Americans, 11 NCAA Tournament berths, seven WNIT spots and a boatload of wins. No one in the history of Tulane women's basketball is even close to Stockton's career numbers.
Â
#LOCKEDINFORSTOCKTON
With a victory over Nicholls on December 4, Coach Lisa Stockton recorded her 500th victory at Tulane. In her 25 years with the Green Wave, Stockton is averaging 20 wins per season – and rising. She is currently the nation's 10th-longest tenured coach at a D1 school. She has more than eight times as many wins as the second-place coach in program history (Joline Matsunami, 1985-90, 60 wins). She was honored for her 500th win on January 26 against Wichita State.
Â
UNDERCLASSMEN OVERPERFORMING
Tulane's roster is seeing a youth movement this year 2018-19 with underclassmen getting a supermajority of minutes played, points scored and assists. Freshmen and sophomores have combined for 67 percent of Green Wave scoring, 64 percent of Tulane minutes and 74 percent of Tulane's assists. Tulane's underclassmen have also contributed 52 percent of the team rebounding.
Â
FREEMAN MAKING THE LEAP
Krystal Freeman is undeniably a candidate for The American's Most Improved Player Award this season. Averaging 1.9 points and 1.9 rebounds per game as a freshman, she has improved those numbers to 13.9 and 7.5, respectively, leading Tulane in both categories. She has compiled seven double-doubles this season after none as a freshman, and she has been named the league's Player of the Week twice and to the Honor Roll three times. Freeman has now recorded double-figure scoring in 19 of Tulane's 24 games this year and has reached 15 points in 13 games.
Â
FREEMAN DOMINATES KNIGHTS
Krystal Freeman set a new career high on Wednesday night, reaching 25 points in a win over UCF. Freeman scored 12 of her 25 points in the fourth quarter as Tulane overcame the league's No. 2 team for the win. Freeman's baskets came as layups, midrange jumpers and at the free throw line on the evening as she surpassed her previous career high of 22 points. Twenty-five points is the single-game high for any Green Wave player this year.
Â
DOUBLE-DOUBLE MACHINE
For the fourth time in five games, Krystal Freeman recorded a double-double in Tulane's win over UCF on Wednesday. This time, she led Tulane with 25 points while adding 10 rebounds and also snuck in a career-high three blocks. She now has seven double-doubles this season.
Â
GUTIERREZ MAKES THE MOST OF START
Freshman Erin Gutierrez got her first career start against UCF on Wednesday night, and she made a huge impact in the game by recording a career-high 10 assists. Gutierrez became the first Tulane player to have 10 assists since Leslie Vorpahl did so in February 2017 against Memphis. Gutierrez also had the game-winning free throws after a steal with three seconds remaining.
Â
FREE THROW ADVANTAGE
In Tulane's tough stretch of six losses in seven games, the Green Wave struggled greatly to get to the free throw line. Tulane averaged just 12 free throw attempts per game during those seven games, making a mere 7.8 free throws per game. Opponents meanwhile, were taking 21.4 free throw attempts per game and making 14.4. On Wednesday against UCF, though, the Green Wave went 10 of 15 from the free-throw line and allowed the Knights to go just 3 of 4 from the charity stripe. That difference may have been enough to get Tulane a victory in a very even game.
Â
THREE-POINT DEFENSE
The Green Wave have done an excellent job defending the 3-point line so far this season. Tulane opponents are shooting just .251 from downtown this year, a number that puts Tulane five in the country. The Green Wave have allowed opponents to make 30 percent or more of their 3-pointers just six times so far this year and have held opponents under 20 percent from long range five times.
CAREER NUMBERS WATCH
Against UCF:
- Erin Gutierrez scored her 100th career point.
- Tatyana Lofton's next point will be her 250th.
- Kaila Anderson will reach 100 rebounds with one more and 200 points with 2 more.
- Kayla Manuirirangi is one made 3-pointer shy of 100.
- Meredith Schulte's 100th career free throw will occur when she makes two more.
- Krystal Freeman is 24 points shy of 400.
- Harlyn Wyatt is 14 points away from 700.
