Baseball Remains Unbeaten With 9-1 win Over Lamar
Feb 19, 2019 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – Behind a solid pitching performance from starter Josh Bates, as well as another strong offensive output on the evening, the Tulane baseball team defeated the Lamar Cardinals 9-1 Tuesday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Â
Bates (1-0), in his first start of the year, limited Lamar (3-1) to just a single hit in his seven innings of work Tuesday, striking out seven and walking two. The lone hit came against the very first Cardinal batter of the game, as the only run for the visitors was unearned due to a passed ball in the inning.
Â
"Anytime you can hold an opponent to one, especially in the midweek, it gives us a chance," head coach Travis Jewett said. "Josh made some adjustments, found his rhythm and he and Frankie got on a pretty good page after that."
Â
For the second consecutive game the Tulane (4-0) offense produced double-digit hits in a contest, earning 14 in the victory and coming from eight different Green Wave players. In the sixth inning alone, the team plated five runs on five hits to extend their lead from just two runs to seven.
Â
Junior Kody Hoese went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and run scored, while Kobi Owen drove in a game-high three on his two hits Tuesday. Trevor Jensen, Jonathon Artigues and Hudson Haskin each earned two hits on the night in the victory, as Sal Gozzo and David Bedgood both produced triples. Â
Â
Lamar starting pitcher Taylor Rich pitched the first 4.1 innings of the game and allowed one unearned run with four strikeouts and two walks. The Cardinals would go on to use five more pitchers in the contest as Jack Dallas (0-1) would earn the loss after he gave up two runs on two hits in the fifth and didn't get through the rest of the inning as the Green Wave took the lead.
Â
Lamar took the lead in the very first inning, as a leadoff single put a Cardinal runner on base to start. A passed ball and a wild pitch allowed the runner to move to third, as an infield grounder to second allowed the runner to score to give the visitors the early lead.
Â
In the bottom of the fourth, Artigues opened the frame with a sharp single back to the mound to reach first. The junior moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a wild pitch, with Haskin continuing his hot streak with a single to left to tie the game at 1-1.
Â
Tulane was finally able to break through in the bottom of the fifth, as Lamar made a pitching change with one out on the board. That move proved costly in the moment as Hoese singled to third, with Jensen getting plunked and Grant Mathews drawing a walk to load the bases.
Â
Artigues came through again with a ripped single up the middle to score Hoese to give Tulane the lead. Lamar changed pitchers again and on the next at-bat Owen flied out to deep center for the sacrifice to plate Jensen and give Tulane a two-run advantage up 3-1.
Â
That lead only grew from there, as in the sixth the team got consecutive triples down the left field line from Gozzo and Bedgood that led to another run, while Hoese flied out to left to bring in another to make it 8-1.
Â
Brendan Power came on to pinch hit in the eighth and drew a walk, with a single by Owen putting two Green Wave runners on. A double play allowed Power to advance to third, as catcher Frankie Niemann singled through the right side of the infield for the RBI to score Power for the final run of the game.
Â
Robert Price finished the game pitching the final two innings, striking out three batters and allowing the second Lamar hit of the contest in the ninth, but the visitors would not be able to do anything with the hit as the junior shut the door with a grounder to second base to end the game.
Â
First pitch for the final game of the series against Lamar is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
