NEW ORLEANS – The Reynolds Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, will he home to Tulane women's basketball's next game, as the Green Wave will face the Golden Hurricane of Tulsa on Sunday at 2 p.m.
STARTING FIVE
- Tulane is heading into the weekend on a two-game losing streak and having lost five of its last six. The team started out 3-0 in league play and is now tied for fifth in the conference standings at 4-5.
- Freshman Dynah Jones has been stellar in the last week, scoring 15 at ECU on February 2 before leading Tulane with 18 against USF on Wednesday. She had 10 consecutive Tulane points in the second quarter against the Bulls and is now the team's third-leading scorer looking to make her fourth straight start Sunday.
- Krystal Freeman was a double-double machine last week, recording two double-doubles with points and rebounds to earn herself a spot on the conference Honor Roll for the third time this season.
- Harlyn Wyatt picked up three blocks against the Bulls, reaching 100 blocks for her career. She is just the eighth Tulane player to ever reach that mark.
- Tulane's underclassmen have combined for 67 percent of Green Wave scoring, 64 percent of Tulane minutes, 74 percent of Tulane's assists and 54 percent of the team rebounding.
SERIES HISTORY – TULSA
- The Green Wave and Golden Hurricane have faced off 28 times in their history, and Tulane has a dominant 20-8 edge in the lifetime series.
- Tulane has won fie consecutive games in the series since the 2015 American Athletic Conference Tournament. Tulsa's last win against Tulane came in February 2015.
- Last season, the Green Wave defeated Tulsa 72-63 on the road to begin conference play and then followed that with a 70-39 beat down of the Golden Hurricane in late January at Fogelman in Devlin.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN HURRICANE
- The Golden Hurricane, based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, have a 10-12 record overall this season and hold a 4-5 mark in conference play. Tulsa recently broke a five-game losing streak with a 49-35 victory over SMU on Wednesday night.
- Tulsa's other league wins have come against Wichita State, Memphis and ECU.
- Topping Tulsa's offense this season has been the duo of Crystal Polk and Alexis Gaulden. Polk is a strong post presence whose 12.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per game lead the team. Gaulden averages 12.7 points per game and is a solid 3-point shooter who leads Tulsa with 44 made 3s this year.
- Gaulden is also the team's top passer with 101 total assists this season.
Now in her 25th year with the Green Wave women's basketball program in 2018-19, it's hard to imagine anyone else at the helm besides Coach Lisa Stockton. Her numbers are staggering: three different conferences, four conference tournament championships, two conference regular-season championships, six All-Americans, 11 NCAA Tournament berths, seven WNIT spots and a boatload of wins. No one in the history of Tulane women's basketball is even close to Stockton's career numbers.
#LOCKEDINFORSTOCKTON
With a victory over Nicholls on December 4, Coach Lisa Stockton recorded her 500th victory at Tulane. In her 25 years with the Green Wave, Stockton is averaging 20 wins per season – and rising. She is currently the nation's 10th-longest tenured coach at a D1 school. She has more than eight times as many wins as the second-place coach in program history (Joline Matsunami, 1985-90, 60 wins). She was honored for her 500th win on January 26 against Wichita State.
UNDERCLASSMEN OVERPERFORMING
Tulane's roster is seeing a youth movement this year 2018-19 with underclassmen getting a supermajority of minutes played, points scored and assists. Freshmen and sophomores have combined for 67 percent of Green Wave scoring, 64 percent of Tulane minutes and 74 percent of Tulane's assists. Tulane's underclassmen have also contributed 54 percent of the team rebounding.
JONES GOES OFF
Dynah Jones is on quite a tear lately since re-entering the starting lineup at Memphis on January 30. In her three games starting, Jones has put up 7, 15 and 18 points, leading Tulane in scoring against USF on Wednesday. Jones put up 10 consecutive Tulane points in the second quarter of that game, just one game after scoring 13 of her 15 total points in the fourth quarter at ECU. She is now the third-leading scorer on the team with 7.5 points per game and has five double-digit scoring games this season and will likely earn her fourth straight start at Tulsa on Sunday.
WYATT BLOCKING SHOTS
Senior Harlyn Wyatt had another great blocking day on Wednesday against USF, as she had three total blocks. That number got her to 100 in her career, making her just the eighth player in Tulane history to reach 100 blocks. Wyatt has 27 blocks this year, and her single-season career high is 30. She needs 11 more blocks to tie with Brittany Lindsey for seventh all-time in program history.
WYATT GETTING BOARDS
Besides achieving a career milestone with 100 blocks on Wednesday, Wyatt had a very strong game on the glass. The senior picked up 11 rebounds, marking her highest total of the season thus far. Wyatt had four offensive rebounds and seven on the defensive glass. Wyatt is second on the team with 111 total rebounds this year.
NO BUTTERFINGERS
The Green Wave were excellent at maintaining possession on Wednesday against the Bulls, turning the ball over just six times total. Tulane's previous season low in that category was 10 against then-No. 18 California in San Diego in November. With only six turnovers for Tulane, USF only managed 2 points off turnovers the entire game.
TEAM SHOOTING SLUMP
In the Green Wave's first 16 games of the year that saw the team jump out to a 13-3 record and a 3-0 mark in conference play, Tulane was shooting the ball at an impressive clip. During those games, Tulane made 43.1 percent of its field goal attempts and 37.5 percent of its 3-point attempts. Since facing UConn on January 16, Tulane is 1-5 and its shooting numbers have been in a slump. In those six games, the Green Wave are making just 30.4 percent of their attempts from the field and 21.8 percent from downtown.
CAREER NUMBERS WATCH
Against USF:
- Krystal Freeman got her 300th career point.
- Harlyn Wyatt blocked her 100th shot.
- Kaila Anderson will reach 100 rebounds with three more and 200 points with 2 more.
- Kayla Manuirirangi is six made 3-pointers shy of 100.
- Tatyana Lofton is two rebounds away from 100.
- Erin Gutierrez needs 8 more points for 100.
The Green Wave are back at home for their next game, taking on UCF on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The game will air live on ESPN3.
