Bowling Wraps up Play at Music City Classic

SMYRNA, Tenn. – The No. 12 Tulane bowling team finished regular season competition with a 15th place finish at the Columbia 300 Music City Classic in Tennessee on Sunday at the Smyrna Bowling Center.
The Green Wave finished the event knocking down 13,502 total pins for a pin average of 193.00. After a tough start to the competition on Friday, Tulane went on to finish the next two days of competition with a 6-3 record in the traditional matches and bracket finals.
"After a challenging first day I was very impressed with how the team rebounded on day two. The team dynamic was awesome on day two and three and it showed with our performance," head coach Hayley Veitch said. "Although we may not have finished as high as we would have liked I definitely saw progress within the team. I believe we are heading in the right direction to be ready for next weekend."
Tulane had four bowlers finish the event in the top 50 individually, led by sophomore Madison McCall who finished eighth with a pin average of 220.40 after knocking down 1,102 pins. Tiera Gulum finished 15th overall, while Hailee Hammond was 18th and Veronica Petrinec was 44th overall.
The Green Wave opened the bracket portion of the tournament Sunday against Duquesne and the contest went the distance as Tulane fell just short in a 4-3 decision (219-168, 151-232, 223-191, 212-153, 226-235, 144-202, 248-218). It would be another challenging contest against Maryville in the next round, with the opponents taking the match 4.5-2.5 (203-180, 158-191, 189-184, 197-181, 142-142, 161-214, 246-245).
In the final showdown of the day, the Green Wave took three of the first four matches against Sacred Heart, holding off the opposition late to take the finale 4-2 (184-163, 152-169, 200-178, 181-117, 138-197, 181-155) and finish the 29-team event in 15th place.
On Saturday the Green Wave turned a big corner going 4-1 in traditional matches and knocking down a total 5,151 pins on the day, with four games with 1,000 or more. The squad finished with an average of 194.6 and jumped from the 18th spot all the way to 14th in knocking down the third-most pins of any team on the afternoon.
The squad rolled one of its highest games of the year in the first match against Saint Francis College, defeating the Brooklyn-based school 1,118-968. Tulane then took to Sacred Heart and defeated SHU 1,039-935.
LIU Brooklyn was the next victory for the team on Saturday, defeating the Blackbirds 1,014-920 before dropping the first contest of the afternoon in a close contest to Adelphi 1,025-1,003. Tulane bounced back by defeating Duquesne 977-879.
On the opening day of the competition, Tulane knocked down 4,579 pins for an average of 183.2. The squad's only win would come against Southland-rival Sam Houston State 997-979, with defeats to Lewis College, Central Missouri, Wisconsin Whitewater and Kentucky Wesleyan.
Vanderbilt won the tournament, defeating McKendree in the finals who finished in second place. Arkansas State finished third, followed by North Carolina A&T and Stephen F. Austin to round out the top five.
Tulane now heads to Texas to take part in the Southland Conference Championships next weekend at the USA Bowl in Dallas, Texas.
