
Bowling Heads to Dallas for Southland Championship

NEW ORLEANS – The No. 12 Tulane bowling team heads to Dallas, Texas, and the USA Bowl center for the 2019 Southland Bowling League Championships this weekend.

The Green Wave, seeded fifth for the event, will open competition on Friday morning beginning at 8:30 a.m. against the fourth-seeded Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks. The format for the Southland Bowling League Championships is double elimination, as they are paired in the same bracket with No. 1 seed Vanderbilt and No. 8 seed Valparaiso.

Each match will follow a best-of-three format, with teams will bowling one standard five-person game for total pinfall, then five baker games for total pinfall. If one team wins both the traditional game and baker games, they advance. If both teams split the standard and baker games, they will move on to a best-of-seven series of baker games.

Tulane comes into the event with a 63-43 record in all competitions this season, as the team earned seven top 10 finishes and eight finishes in the top 15 in nine total events this season. The Green Wave are 30-17 in traditional matches this year, with a 25-19 record in Baker format competitions.

The Green Wave head into the event led by senior Tiera Gulum, as the New York native has knocked down 8,667 pins in single matches this year, sporting a pin average of 201.55 in 43 games. Gulum became the first bowler in program history to roll a 300 game, coming in the Sunshine State Winter Classic in Orlando in February.

Sophomore Madison McCall has knocked down 8,331 pins through 43 individual games and has an average of 193.74 with over 8,300 pins knocked down. McCall is coming off the Columbia 300 Music City Classic rolling a season-high 256 and has 18 games rolling a 200 or better this year.

Freshman Crystal Singh has helped make an immediate impact in her debut season with the Green Wave, posting a pin average of 188.75 in 40 games. Until Gulum rolled her 300, Singh rolled a 256 against Texas Southern at the Prairie View A&M Invitational, besting the 247 by junior Isabelle Lee for the team season-high game through the season up until that point.

Lee has been steady throughout the season, knocking down 6,774 pins in 36 games for a pin average of 188.16. At the UMES Hawk Classic, Lee posted games of 233 against Sam Houston State, 231 against Vanderbilt, 213 against Youngstown State and 200 against Sacred Heart, helping Tulane post a third-place finish in the event, the team's highest finish of the season.

Senior Hailee Hammond has picked up the pace in the latter half of her swan song season at Tulane, as in 35 games she's knocked down 6,583 pins for an average of 188.08. Over the course of the last three tournaments, Hammond has rolled three games of 245 or better, and seven games over 200 in netting a new career-high 266 last weekend in Tennessee against Saint Francis College.

Sitting fourth in total pins knocked down is the second freshman on the team in Florida product Veronica Petrinec. In 38 individual games Petrinec has knocked down 7.015 pins for a 184.60 average, rolling her season-best game of 246 against Texas Southern at the Mid-Winter Invitational in Arkansas. Petrinec has nine games this year of 200 or better.

Eight teams comprise the Southland Bowling League, with seven being represented in the NTCA Top 25 Coaches Poll. Vanderbilt is No. 2 nationally, followed by No. 4 Arkansas State, No. 5 Sam Houston State, No. 6 Stephen F. Austin, Tulane, No.23 Louisiana Tech and No. 24 Youngstown State. Valparaiso is receiving votes.
