NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane baseball team looks to continue its winning ways in the conference as the Green Wave opens a three-game league series against the USF Bulls on Friday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans.
Â
First pitch for the opener on Friday is set for 6:30 p.m., with game two on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. and the finale Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games of the series will be streamed online at TulaneGreenWave.com, with Todd Graffagnini providing play-by-play on the radio home of Tulane baseball on WRBH 88.3 FM.
Â
The Tulane University Marching Band drumline will be performing pregame just outside the gates of the stadium on Friday, as Tulane welcomes back all former letterwinners to the contest that night. Saturday is a big day as the team will honor the 1979 Metro Tournament Champion Green Wave team, as fans will be able to pick up a 1979 commemorative poster.
Â
Sunday, conference champion swimmer Olivia Johnson from the women's swimming and diving team, as well as indoor pole vault conference champion Rebekah Markel of the track and field team will each throw out ceremonial first pitches pregame, while members of Riptide's Kids Club will celebrate his birthday with inflatables, cupcakes and pizza.
Â
The Green Wave take a three-game winning streak into the series against the Bulls, looking to overcome their conference foes in a series for the first time since the 2016 season. Tulane is 22-11 on the season, sitting in second place in the league with a 4-2 mark after playing two league series.
Â
Tulane's propensity for scoring runs in droves came through again on Tuesday, with the team plating seven runs in the second inning and three each in two of the latter innings in a 15-14 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday. Tulane had a season-high 19 hits and five home runs as a team in the win, with the group hitting .307 on the year right now.
Â
A big week for junior Kody Hoese got even bigger on Tuesday as he broke a 9-9 tie with the Lions with his nation-leading 17th home run of the year on a three-run shot. Hoese, ranking at or near the top of a host of national stats, became the latest Tulane baseball player to be affiliated with the prestigious USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award, being selected to the midseason watch list on Wednesday afternoon.
Â
In the illustrious history of the program, Hoese is the fourth player to be named to the list in some fashion and the first since Rob Segedin was a semifinalist for the award in 2010. Michael Aubrey is the only player to be a finalist coming in 2003, while Hoese is the first to be selected to the midseason watch list and Shooter Hunt being on the preseason list in 2003.
Â
There was a smattering of career bests on Tuesday against the Lions on Tuesday, as Trevor Jensen earned his 19th multi-hit game of the year on a new career record four hits, while Luke Glancy set new personal marks with two home runs in the game. Glancy and Frankie Niemann combined to drive in eight, each having four in the game, joining four other players to drive in at least four in a game this season.
Â
Tulane pitchers rallied after the tough loss to the Shockers in the opener last Friday by holding Wichita State to six runs in the first game of the doubleheader the next day, and four to clinch the series in the very next game of the afternoon. League opponents are hitting .259 against Tulane pitching so far through conference play and .242 on the year.
Â
South Florida defeated Bethune-Cookman in Tampa on Wednesday 12-2, improving the Bulls' record to 15-16 in 2019. USF has played three weekend American series so far, sitting at 2-7 in the league after pulling a game off Cincinnati and UCF, with a sweep to league-leading ECU in between.
