Baseball Falls to Southeastern Louisiana, 10-3
Apr 23, 2019 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Tulane baseball team took the lead twice within the first three innings of its game Tuesday night against Southeastern Louisiana, but the Lions scored eight unanswered runs over the course of three innings to defeat the Green Wave 10-3 at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Tulane (26-14) scored a pair of runs in the first and got another in the third after the visitors tied the game to hold a 3-2 advantage, but would be unable to get much of anything else going offensively as the Lions (22-19) scored two runs in the fifth to take the lead, two more in the sixth and four in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
"Sometimes when you play the game of baseball as much as we do, you just get beat," head coach Travis Jewett said. "You've got to give them a lot of credit. They just beat us tonight. We didn't do a lot of things that hurt us, they just got their hits and we couldn't stop it."
Freshman Hudson Haskin earned his third consecutive game with three hits, hitting a two-run home run with a run scored. Kody Hoese had two hits, which included taking back the lead nationally in home runs with his 21st of the season.
Krishna Raj (3-1) suffered his first loss of the year, allowing four runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Southeastern Louisiana earned 14 hits off Tulane pitching Tuesday night, as the Green Wave used seven hurlers in the contest.
SLU's Bryce Tassin (3-2) earned the win after the Lions' first two pitchers allowed Tulane to race out to a positive start, as Tassin pitched three innings allowing just one hit with a strikeout. Tassin, along with Grant Upton and Jared Biddy combined to allow just two hits to the Green Wave, while striking out five and walking none through the final five innings of the game.
After Raj and the defense retired the Lions in order to open the game, Hoese legged out an infield single to reach first. With one swing of the bat Haskin put Tulane on top with a shot off the video board to make it 2-0 Green Wave.
Two swings of the bat for Southeastern quickly tied the game with Tulane at 2-2 with a pair of solo home runs in the top of the second, but Hoese turned the tide back in the Green Wave's favor with a solo home run of his own in the bottom of the third put the team back on top at 3-2.
From there, the Lions plated two inherited runners that were credited to Raj in the top of the fifth to steal the lead and go up 4-3. Two more hits in the fifth brought in a pair of runs, with five hits in the seventh putting the game out of reach to make it 10-3 Southeastern.
Tulane returns to American Athletic Conference play this weekend, traveling to take on the ECU Pirates in Greenville.
