Baseball Drops Midweek Contest to Nicholls, 5-3

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Tulane baseball team had just retaken the lead for the second time on the night in the previous half inning, but a three-run seventh by the visiting Nicholls Colonels spelled doom for the Green Wave in a 5-3 loss Tuesday night at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

In a back-and-forth game from the start, the two teams battled to a tie and two lead changes all within the first six innings of the contest Tuesday night, but Tulane (28-20) wouldn't be able to battle back after Nicholls (25-24) plated their trio of runs to suffer the loss.

"Baseball right now is demanding pitching and defense, and we're just not doing it well enough right now to win these games," assistant coach Daniel Latham said. "Hitting is difficult and cyclical, but these are the games that we have to try and break through to win, and we just aren't doing it right now."

Jonathon Artigues was the only Tulane player to earn multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-3 with a single and team-leading fifth triple of the season against the Colonels.

Starter Trent Johnson pitched the first three innings of the game and allowed just one run on three hits, as Justin Campbell (1-2) wound up suffering the loss as he allowed two runs on three hits in two innings, working through a bases loaded jam when he entered the game and got the team's first strikeout before finishing the game with three of the team's six.

Colonels starter Parker White allowed all three Tulane runs in his five innings of work Tuesday, scattering six hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Only one of the following three pitchers for Nicholls gave up a hit to the Green Wave for the rest of the game, with Colin Kramer (2-2) earning the win and Beau Balado (2) picking up the save.

Champ Davison, Ethan Valdez and Dane Simon combined for nine of Nicholls' 12 hits, as Simon drove in two and Davison scored twice.

Nicholls opened the scoring with its home run in the first at-bat of the game, and it stayed that way until the bottom of the fourth at Tulane took to the inning and got a Luke Glancy double to right with an out on the board. Artigues singled to center to plate Glancy and tie the game at 1-1, as David Bedgood followed suit with Artigues at second and singled to right center to give Tulane its first lead of the night up 2-1.

Nicholls tied the game again with another solo home run in the very next half inning, as in the sixth Artigues struck again with a leadoff triple off the wall in center to open the frame, coming home on the very next pitch due to a wild pitch to put the Green Wave back on top at 3-2.

Nicholls struck again in the next half inning, getting three runs on five hits in chasing Campbell from the game and pulling the lead back from Tulane to go up 5-3.

Tulane will be back in action this weekend, traveling to take on the Houston Cougars for a three-game American Athletic Conference series.
