NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Tulane Green Wave volleyball team returns to the floor on Friday at 6 p.m. when the squad opens play in the 2019 Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Volleyball Classic against Missouri State and runs Friday through Sunday at Fogelman in Devlin.
The Green Wave welcomes the Houston Baptist Huskies, Ole Miss Rebels and Missouri State to the Crescent City for six-game tournament, which begins at 3 p.m. Friday with Ole Miss taking on HBU. On Saturday, the Bears and Rebels kick things off at 11 a.m., with Tulane taking on the Huskies at 2 p.m. HBU and Missouri State will close out play in the tournament that night at 7:30 p.m.
On Sunday, the tournament comes to a close as Tulane plays Ole Miss in the finale and is set for 1 p.m.
Friday is National Food Bank Day, and to help the team is asking all fans attending the tournament this weekend to bring canned food items that will be collected and donated to a local food bank in the city. Fans who do so will receive a free voucher for popcorn at the concession stand in the arena.
Tulane gets back into action on Friday looking to shake off a five-set loss to Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday night in the team's home opener. The Green Wave sit at 3-1 on the year coming into this weekend's event, as the team has been undefeated in its home tournament in each of the last two seasons coming into this year.
The Green Wave are hitting .240 as a group through four games this season, averaging 13.29 kills per set. Junior Lexie Douglas leads the way with 43 kills and a 3.07 kills per set average after her 21-kill performance Tuesday night.
With a hitting clip of .472, Kayla Dinkins leads the team in overall attack percentage, while also leading the team in blocks with 14 on the year for a 1.17 blocks per set average. Dinkins had seven on Tuesday, as the only other player with double figure blocks so far this year is Markenzie Benoit with 10.
Amanda Giardina leads the setters with 64 assists, averaging 4.92 per set after having 27 in the match earlier this week. Jenna Ibieta has 50 for the team and is averaging 5.56 per set this year, with Taylor Henigsman having 30.
Senior Kaylie McHugh leads the team in digs with 57, averaging 4.38 per set and had a match-high 25 against the Lions. Sophomore Makala Heidelberg has 49 on the year and is averaging 3.77 per set, as the team this year is averaging 14.64 digs per set.
Missouri State comes into the tournament with a 2-2 record, falling to Oral Roberts on Tuesday after going 2-1 in its home tournament in Springfield. The Huskies are coming off a win against Prairie View A&M Tuesday in Houston, moving to 3-1 on the year. The Ole Miss Rebels hosted a tournament last weekend, falling in all three games to Rice, Iowa State and UCF.
Saturday's meeting between Tulane and HBU will be the first in the series, while Friday's contest against the Bears is the first since 1980 and the third meeting overall. The last time Tulane and Ole Miss played was in 1992, as the Rebels are 9-7-1 all-time against Tulane.
