Jan 12, 2020 | Women's Bowling
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The No. 16 Tulane bowling team produced one of its strongest displays of the season earning seven victories over the course of the first two days, while getting a pair of top 10 individual placings in a fifth-place finish at the 2020 Stormin' Blue & Gold Vegas Classic at the South Point Bowling Plaza.
The Green Wave finished the event with an 8-5 overall record, knocking down 13,791 pins over the course of the three-day event, ending with a pin average of 205.8.
"Overall I am pleased with the start to the spring semester. The team looked really sharp the last couple of days and we did really well keeping up with the higher scoring pace," head coach Hayley Veitch said. "Madison and Amelia killed it this tournament and their consistent performance certainly helped the team to finish in the top five."
The team was buoyed by a host of standout performances in individual matches on Saturday, as junior Madison McCall earned her highest finish of the year to earn all-tournament team honors by knocking down 1,170 pins to finish fourth. Freshman Amelia Vasquez finished seventh and also earned second-team all-tournament honors as she knocked down 1,085 pins.
Sunday's final began with another matchup against Nebraska, and while the Huskers were able to take the first two matches, Tulane withstood and took the third to stave off the sweep. However, Nebraska was able to pull out the next two and take the opener 4-1 (232-217, 208-194, 213-236, 212-181, 213-190).
Match two was against southland foe Stephen F. Austin, proving to be a back and forth affair until the Ladyjacks wound up winning the match 4-2 (167-226, 223-173, 191-179, 234-221, 158-191, 230-205).
Tournament host Mount Saint Mary's was the final opponent of the tournament, and while The Mount was able to eek out a win in the first match, the Green Wave took the next three after that to put the opposition on the brink. While winning game five, Tulane closed things out before needing to go to a deciding seventh and won 4-2 (216-236, 212-181, 177-170, 223-212, 183-207, 244-185).
The week of competition at the 2020 USBC Team USA Team Trials and U.S. Amateur Championship served as a solid warm up for Tulane as the group raced out of the gate on day one earning a 4-1 record and knocking down 5,212 pins to sit in third place overall, with a pin average of 208.5. The Green Wave knocked down over 1,000 pins in four of the five contests, trailing McKendree in first and Nebraska in second.
Opening the tournament against Maryville, the Green Wave opened with a solid 1,016-947 victory before suffering a close defeat to McKendree in the next contest 1,068-996. Tulane rebounded in a big way earning a 1,019-998 victory over Nebraska, netting a season high in the next contest with a 1,129-647 win over in-state rival Grambling and closing day one with a 1,052-973 win over Saint Francis.
Moving on to Saturday, Tulane moved down one spot to fourth place but still proved to be a force throughout the traditional matches by knocking down 5,112 pins for a two-day pinfall total of 10,324.
The Green Wave kept their streak of 1,000-pin performances going by earning a 1,042-861 win over Prairie View A&M, doing so again in the next match but just falling to Delaware State 1,052-1,024. The team rebounded with a 994-905 win against Monmouth, going toe-to-toe with Vanderbilt before falling just short 1,090-1,073. Tulane closed out Saturday with a 979-942 win over league foe Valparaiso.
Tulane will be back in action February 7-9, participating in the Wildcat Invitational in Orlando, Florida, hosted by Bethune-Cookman.
