NEW ORLEANS — The Tulane sailing team finished fourth overall in the Nelson Roltsch Regatta on Saturday, defeating UC Santa Barbara, USF, Wisconsin and Texas on Lake Pontchartrain.
"Another solid day for the Wave. We dropped a couple races we'd sure like to get back, but at this point with our progression, that's to be expected," head coach Charles Higgins said. "I'm really pleased with how we bounced back each time, and I'm very encouraged from what I've seen so far overall at such an early point in the season."
The Olive and Blue won three of their last seven races on day two of the regatta, beating the Bulls and the Longhorns with 1-2-3 finishes and taking down Wisconsin with a 1-2-4 result.
Quinn Keenan and Caroline Benson alternated sailing the skipper position in boat one, alongside crews of Kate Lenhard and Kit Stoll. Cameron Giblin and Grace Siwicki teamed up in boat two, while Ciara Rodriguez-Horan and Amelia Schofield were the pair in boat three.
The Green Wave won 12 total races in the two-day competition, five of which were 1-2-3 sweeps.
College of Charleston (20/1) won the regatta and was followed by Navy (19/2) in second and Jacksonville (14/7) in third.
"We have a ways to go, but the pieces are certainly in place for us to become a very dangerous team to face come season's end," Higgins said.Â
The Green Wave are back in action in two weeks, with some of the team heading to Charleston, South Carolina to compete in the Bob Bavier Team Race and others remaining in New Orleans to host the Big Easy Fleet Race.
Nelson Roltsch was a member of the Tulane sailing team in 1983, when he tragically lost his life in a storm while racing off of the Mississippi coast. In 1984, the former Windjammer Regatta was renamed in his memory.
