Sailing Closes Challenging Weekend in Bob Bavier Team Race
Mar 1, 2020 | Sailing
CHARLESTON, South Carolina — The Tulane sailing team wrapped up action in a competitive Bob Bavier Team Race on Sunday, winning five races in the two-day regatta to defeat Eckerd and South Florida.
"Today was a much better day for us. We were able to take a couple wins off of some top teams, but I was most pleased again with how much we were able to really battle in the races we lost," head coach Charles Higgins said. "Many of those were incredibly close to the end. This was a tough event simply due to the fact that there were really no weak teams. While mistakes at this level are costly, they are great opportunities to learn from and get better. I'm very proud to say that we leave this weekend as a far better team than when we came in."
After beating Eckerd once and USF twice on Saturday, the Green Wave came back out on the water to finish out five remaining races in the second round. Tulane defeated Jacksonville (1-2-5) and Navy (2-3-4), before notching the win over Eckerd (1-2-6) in the sail off to solidify an eighth-place finish among some of the nation's top teams.
Tulane kept its same lineup in its final races this weekend, as Quinn Keenan and Caroline Benson teamed up in boat one, Cameron Giblin and Kit Stoll were paired in boat two and Ciara Rodriguez-Horan sailed alongside Stephen Hahn in boat three in the team race.
No. 9 College of Charleston won the regatta (19/2), followed by No. 5 Yale (17/4) in second and No. 3 Harvard (15/6) in third.
"It's going to be a long and hard road, but if we can keep this level of progression going, then we should all be excited for what's to come in the not too distant future," Higgins added.
Next up, the team head back to Charleston, South Carolina to sail in the College of Charleston Spring Interconference on Saturday and Sunday.
