Women's Tennis Travels to Wichita for Two Matches

NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane women's tennis team travels to Wichita, Kan., this weekend to compete against American Athletic Conference foe Wichita State and a non-conference opponent, UT Arlington. The Green Wave's first match of the weekend is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m., on Saturday, February 22 against host Wichita State, before taking on UT Arlington on the following morning at 9 a.m.
IN THE RANKINGS
Freshman Mackenzie Clark climbed in the ITA's national singles rankings this week, coming in at No. 101 in the newest rankings released on February 19. Clark will look to carry her momentum into this weekend and build on her historic year.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:
WICHITA STATE
The Shockers (1-8) enter the weekend on an eight-match losing streak. Their most recent result was a 4-0 loss against Rice on February 15. Wichita State's sole win on the year came against Abilene Christian back on January 11. The Shockers are led by the star doubles pairing of Marta Bellucco and Sarvinoz Saidhujaeva. Bellucco and Saidhujaeva, who own a record of 2-3 and are currently ranked the No. 28 doubles team in the nation.Â
UT ARLINGTON
The Mavericks (4-1) head into the weekend coming off five straight home matches to open the season. Their most recent match was a decisive 5-2 victory over UT San Antonio on February 8. Polina Akimova is currently playing in the No. 1 singles spot. She has a record of (6-6) and is coming off of a victory in her last match. Momoka Horiguchi plays in the No. 2 singles spot and has a record of (11-5).Â
DOUBLES POINT DICTATION
Tulane owns a (6-0) record when winning the doubles point this season, but has not recorded a victory without at least two doubles wins.
LAST TIME OUT
The Green Wave (6-3) are coming off of a 4-1 loss to SMU on February 16 that snapped their two-match winning streak. Tulane was unable to pick up the doubles point, falling 2-1. Sophomore Adelaide Lavery secured the Green Wave's only point of the day, winning her singles match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
RANKED SINGLES WINS
Tulane junior Lauren Gish and freshmen Mackenzie Clark and Lahari Yelamanchili have all secured singles wins over ranked opponents in their first season with the Green Wave. Most recently, Clark upset 42nd-ranked Taylor Bridges at LSU on Jan. 31, after Gish defeated No. 116 Cameron Corse from Notre Dame and Yelamanchili outlasted No. 18 Eden Richardson of LSU during the fall season.
