Baseball Falls in Pelican Cup Opener to Privateers
Feb 26, 2020 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The No. 29 Tulane baseball team fell to the New Orleans Privateers 10-1 Wednesday night at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium, dropping the first game of the 2020 Pelican Cup in-season series.
Â
New Orleans (5-4) exploded for nine runs over the course of three innings, plating four runs in the second, three runs in the third and two runs in the fourth. The Green Wave (6-2) struggled offensively, producing a run on five hits in the contest, while the Privateers produced 15 hits on the night, scoring one more run in the eighth.
Â
"I tell the players that opportunities come in a lot of different shapes and sizes, and they don't necessarily have to be coming off of wins," head coach Travis Jewett said. "Now we have the opportunity where we've been knocked to the canvas and now how are we going to get up."
Â
Four of Tulane's five hits came from the combined effort of Frankie Niemann and Trevor Minder, as Niemann was 2-for-3 with a walk, while Minder was 2-for-3 with a walk. Parker Haskin had the other hit, driving in the team's only run in the bottom of the ninth on a single up the middle.
Â
"Like coach was just saying, we just have to bounce back and learn from it," Minder said. "Come out ready to go this weekend, which I think we will."
Â
Junior Chris Holcomb (0-1) suffered the loss for Tulane after allowing four runs, three earned, on three hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
